106. Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash - PlayStation 4 - October 8

Image

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash is the seventh entry in one of my favorite series of what I call "titty anime games." As is IMMEDIATELY apparently from the box art alone, this is not going to be a game for everyone. A lot of folks will likely find this game offensive, and honestly, I can't blame them. There are different ways to look at this game, and I really enjoyed, but your perspective on it is really going to do a lot to determine how you end up feeling about it.

Image

The Senran Kagura series is about different schools of female shinobi-in-training, and while most of the games are side scrolling beat-em-ups, there are a couple that try on different genres, and this is one of those that deviate from the normal genre instead trying a competitive third person shooter that's not unlike Splatoon in its feel and format. It also brings together the various characters and side groups that have been introduced throughout the series' games in an attempt to tie them together into a single canon universe to serve as a launching point for future games in the series, a point that is made pretty clear at the end of the story mode.

Image

The biggest complaint I've seen with this game is the blatant objectification of women, and that's a valid complaint. There are really two ways of looking at this type of game that determines whether or not one is outraged at the sexism. The first way is the way that folks tend to look at porn - that it turns women into sexual objects rather than people and sets up unrealistic expectations for women. The other way to see the game (the way I see it) is as a caricature. Yes, it objectifies the women in the game but in the same way that dime-a-dozen romance novel covers objectify men - in a way that is OBVIOUSLY unrealistic. No one looks like the women in this game; it's unrealistic to the point of absurdity which makes it, in my view, more caricature than serious objectification. I'm absolutely not telling people that they shouldn't feel offended by this game, but I am saying that some folks see this series as stupidly absurd rather than an attempt at legitimately portraying women. As an added side note, too, the characters, while trope-y at times, are genuinely fairly well developed and legitimately strong female character. They just happen to be strong female characters with massive breasts who are shooting each other with water guns in tiny bikinis.

Image

The visuals are about what one familiar with the company would expect from Marvelous - good but not extraordinary. There's not an enormous amount of detail in the water effects, but you're unlikely to pay any real attention to the standing water when the action starts to heat up. The sound is quite well done, though; the music is really enjoyable, and the voice acting (which is only in Japanese) is well done, although a few characters play up the cutesy high pitched voice cliche a bit too much. The story is pretty simple for the most part; the four squads of shinobi girls - Hanzo, Gessen, Hebijo, and Homura Crimson Squad - are transported to this island and forced to compete in a water gun tournament to build up shinobi energy to keep the seal on some ancient demon from breaking. Individual characters get some deeper motivations throughout the single player, but that's the basic plot.

Image

The game plays a lot like Splatoon except either team deathmatch or survival instead of Splatoon's unique "Turf War" game mode. The single player has a story mode consisting of a prologue and five arcs as well as random side missions, a free tournament, and a survival mode. I had a hard time finding folks to play online with, but from what I can tell, that's either team deathmatch or survival as well. You can equip your girls with any of the water guns that you want, and instead of the shinobi arts they had in the previous games, you get ability cards that you can use to customize a small deck that makes up their skill arsenals. The concept is simple, but the wide array of characters, costumes, and skill cards give the game a lot more depth than is immediately apparent for those who feel like diving in.

Image

Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash is definitely a controversial piece of the PlayStation 4's library, but for those not bothered by the fairly sexist nature of the game, it's actually a pretty fun one. The characters have a lot more depth than one would expect from their models and the game's concept, but the gameplay itself is rock solid and addicting. It can get repetitive (as is par for the course for the Senran Kagura series), but that seems to be less of an issue in this game than in most of the entries in the series. I wouldn't say "RUN OUT AND BUY THIS GAME NOW," but if you're into third person arena style shooters and like pervy anime games, check this one out.

My son had his birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese this weekend. I joined my daughter playing Transformers: Human Alliance, a rail shooter developed by Sega that is basically House of The Dead with robots instead of monsters. She left after a few levels. I played a bit by myself. My wife joined me for a bit. She left. I played by myself a bit more. I realized I was getting close to the end. Some random kid joined. I realized I wasn't as close to the end as I thought. He left. I've come too far to stop. I'm beating this game. Some other random kid joined. I beat the game. That random kid's mom pressed the start button to skip the ending sequence and credits. I left. Some other random kid got to play the rest of my credit. This is the arcade experience in 2017!!!!

Metroid Samus Returns is excellent. I won't write much about it here since so many members have already written so much. I will say, however, that: (1) it is almost the best 2D Metroid game; (2) it has the best boss fights of any 2D Metroid game; and (3) it is the hardest Metroid game since the original. It is a truly spectacular remake that I cannot recommend highly enough.

I agree with that.

And I beat that third PSP shooter...

71. Soreyuke! BurunyanMan Portable | 8/10

Image

Soreyuke! BurunyanMan Portable is a bullet hell cute'em up infused with humor and ecchi. Upon starting this game, the player can pick one of three girls to fight with. All playable characters are moe anthropomorphizations of cats, and all bosses are the same of mice. There's a plot in here somewhere but who cares. You're going to shoot a lot of mice and mice-girls. When you fight bosses, after you beat them, you get a bit of a naughty show of their defeated bodies. That might sound a tad raunchy, but Soreyuke! BurunyanMan Portable is actually the tame PSP port of Go Go Burunyanman Hardcore!! for PC. (Go Go Burunyanman Hardcore!! had literal hentai scenes in it, but Soreyuke! BurunyanMan Portable keeps things ecchi.) Even if you're not interested in smutty meow meow, the shoot 'em up gameplay here is sublime. The colorful graphics are outstanding, the wonderful OST consists of high fidelity electronica, and it's simply hard not to enjoy yourself while playing. Really it boils down to three questions: Do you enjoy bullet hell shoot 'em ups? Do you like cats? Do you enjoy ecchi? If you answered yes to at least two of those questions, then you should play Soreyuke! BurunyanMan Portable.

48. Odallus - PC

Odallus is an indie game that takes a lot of cues from Castlevania series. In fact, I'd sum it up as Rondo of Blood devolved to an NES+ level (extra large sprites, some effects you can't get on the NES, but Konami style music and keeping to the limited palette aesthetic) and with some Metroidvania-style movement abilities and changes to level design in the process. The gameplay ends up being a little uneven, but overall it's a good platformer and is reasonably forgiving in the end.

The story is told through an initial series of Ninja Gaiden style cutscenes and then a series of pre-boss banter dialog boxes. There's also some runestones that are found in each level that explain the backstory. Honestly it isn't worth remembering, something something evil rising, something something you put a sword in it. There's some awkward wording and editing errors, and I honestly can't tell if it's intentional for that old NES feel or if the devs (who are Brazilian) just didn't get the best translator on the case.

Gameplay wise, you have a sword and three subweapons, each with their own ammo counter. The axe is like the Casltevania dagger, but it pierces enemies and can bounce off walls and still be damaging while it clinks off. The torch is basically like the CV3 holy water. And the spear is a modified version of the CV axe, where it arcs up but then falls straight down after a bit; it's super awkward to use but tends to do the most damage. As you proceed through the game you gain the ability to push large blocks, breath underwater (you start with a five second timer), double jump, dash, and slow fall/ride air currents up. You'll need to return to previous areas with these power ups to explore new paths, such as getting better swords and armor, getting health upgrades, getting ammo capacity upgrades, and discovering secret paths. See, like Rondo, the levels have multiple exits. There's a main path of four levels, but then you get to the fifth stage and you're blocked. So you need to go back to the first four and find the hidden exit to each of the four secondary levels. Only when you've defeated all eight bosses can you get to the final level, which consists of two branching paths where you have to refight a boss you fought before with new moves. Once you do both paths you can do the final boss (and the way open is saved through restarts, reducing frustration). There's also a shopkeeper in every level who sells health, subweapons, and extra lives (which, like CV2, are used to restart you from checkpoints rather than starting a level over).

The bosses are a mixture of large enemies and smaller humanoids, and all of them are very pattern based. In fact, the amount of RNG in the patterns is actually quite low; while the boss might position itself based on where you're standing the sequence of attacks will be the same from attempt to attempt. In fact, of all the bosses I had to restart on only one, who summons a helper, had RNG, and that was with the pattern of the helper's attacks. Considering just how fast some of the bosses are and how small their tells can be, you will be thankful that you can memorize a sequence that will give you various shots at their weak points without taking damage.

As I mentioned, aesthetically it hearkens back to the NES. It doesn't slavishly hold to it, so we get large sprites, some nice parallax, and we aren't technically limited by the color palette, but the game still tries to stay true to how we remember it looked. So stage backgrounds tend to have a limited range of colors, and character sprites don't use a lot of different colors either. While it technically can't be made on an NES it looks the part to anyone who hasn't done the research on how the NES works.

A downer is that the game has somewhat of a messy difficulty curve. Your attack range is always the same as the short whip in Castlevania, and it ends up causing you to get hit a ton. Most enemies can outrange your attack, and many are rather fast and take multiple hits to die, so you're going to be tanking a lot of hits. There's enough health pickups and merchants that you should be able to at least get to the boss checkpoint without dying, but it still will get you if you ever get cocky. The platforming is also not as tight as it should be. You have a power grip maneuver, but it's fairly clumsy due to the limited animation frames and sometimes requires more precision than you think to hit that sweet spot. There's also several sections that require very precise jump heights to not take damage from spikes. Fortunately, the game has zero instant death; lava and spikes only deal damage and there's no bottomless pits.

At the end of the day Odallus is a decent enough platformer that takes a lot of good stuff from Castlevania. It is smart enough to not just rip it off; think of how Holy Diver takes cues from Casltevania while doing its own thing. There's no penalty for game overs other than restarting the stage, so it's more approachable than the NES Castlevanias not named 2 for beating it. Just watch out for that last boss; he's one you're going to want to memorize the pattern on and learn how to manipulate his positioning.
