126. Spirit Camera: The Curse Memoir - 3DS - December 23

Image

Spirit Camera is a spin-off game for the Fatal Frame series, and I got this about a year ago when I bought the entire Fatal Frame series in a single giant lot on eBay. I didn't get around to playing it until now, however, and honestly, I wasn't really missing anything. First and foremost (and least importantly to be frank), the name drives me insane. It's a Fatal Frame game; I feel like that should be somewhere in the game's title. I mean, when you get to the game's main menu, the story mode is called "Fatal Frame: Diary of Faces," but it irks me in a really pet peeve-y sort of way that the game itself isn't called Fatal Frame: Diary of Faces. But I digress.

Image

Spirit Camera is a beautiful example of a brilliant concept with atrocious implementation. Most of the game is augmented reality; the central character is a ghosty girl named Maya, and she appears in your living room (or bedroom or bathroom or office or wherever you're playing) through use of the 3DS's two external cameras. The Diary of Faces itself is actually an AR book that ships with every copy of the game (don't worry, guys who buy games loose; Nintendo was kind enough to provide a PDF online that's only mildly irritating to use). My first complaint about the AR format lies in the quality of the 3DS's outer cameras; they're just too low resolution to really feel any immersion. Don't get me wrong, the effect is cool, and I'm glad they did it - I'll take a "meh" creative idea over a bland idea - but with the low resolution of the cameras used, the game relied on it too much. Using them if fantastic, but for probably 75% of the game, you were looking at a blurry version of what's actually right in front of you. My other complaint comes from my atrocious sloth - it made me move around. I didn't have to chase the ghosts or anything, but you have to be able to turn 360 degrees at any given moment and look up and down quickly because the ghosts do surround you. For those as lazy as I, moving the system to aim or look is super cool, but I'd prefer it stick to a 150 degree or so angle in front of me..

Image

As for the visuals that aren't captured with the camera, they actually look quite good. I haven't seen character models look this good in many other 3DS games. It's no PlayStation Vita, but they look good. The sound design is exactly what you'd expect from Fatal Frame - the most important character has decent voice acting, but the rest suck and talk way too slowly. That's okay, though; that's become pretty standard for the series. The story is also extremely business-as-usual for Fatal Frame and reminded me a LOT of Fatal Frame V. There's some village that has to perform some ritual to keep something spiritual from destroying it, so they get a shrine maiden who's been kept in total isolation her whole damn life to undergo some horrific ritual to appease imaginary spirits and save the world. Or something. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Hella "meh."

Image

The biggest problem the game has other than just generally not being all that interesting is that it's super short; from the time I first loaded the game to the time I finished the final boss, two hours passed. That's it. Two hours. There are a couple of other game modes that I was way too bored to feel like trying out, but the story mode, start to finish, is two or (at the maximum) three hours. Fine if you're at the DMV and don't mind looking like an idiot spinning in circles, but don't expect a grade A horror experience from this like the other Fatal Frame games provided. It sucks that I'm left so utterly disappointing in Spirit Camera because I am a HUGE Fatal Frame fan. I have a Japanese copy of Fatal Frame 5 that I can't run on my North American Wii U and couldn't read or understand even if it weren't region locked JUST because I love the series so much that I wanted a physical copy of the game on my shelf (and it was cheaper than the PAL version). I'm sorry, but I just can't recommend this one. If you want a horror experience on your 3DS, stick to Corpse Party or Resident Evil: Revelations.

86. Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary World Tour - PC

So this is the new definitive edition of Duke Nukem 3D. If you don't already have Duke 3D and are interested in playing it some time, pick it up. If you already have Megaton or a similar edition it's a harder choice. Let me go over what's changed.

The first obvious thing is there is a new fifth episode done by several of the original level designers. My opinion is that it was only ok. The style of replicating real world locations is still alive and well, and for the most part that part works great. The main part where it fells not so good is that this is clearly a challenge episode. If you've ever played expansions for early 90's shooters you'll recognize the style. You face lots of late game enemies and in particular a lot of downgraded bosses. This does give you an excuse to use your explosives a lot more, but it also leads to a lot of cheap deaths, especially against the Cycloid Emperor, as all the encounters now are in much more confined spaces and you're very likely to take a rocket and die. The boss damage is not reduced in these forms; merely their size and health.

However, not all is lost. One major addition is that they've tapped into the standard replay system in a really awesome way. When you die you're given a timeline up to that point and you can choose to rewind to any earlier point. This removes the need to quicksave every so often and undoes a lot of "turn the corner and rocket to the face" that can be frustrating. The other nice thing they've added is a level select from the get go for all the normal levels (secret levels still need to be found manually and I don't know if they show up afterwards). The other thing added in the fifth episode is a new weapon and a new enemy that uses the same weapon. The Incinerator is a recolored Freezer and uses the same slot. It fires a jet of plasma in an arc that will set an enemy on fire or leave a puddle of lava on the ground that will eventually dissipate. This can kill standard enemies in one shot, though the harder ones need to let the burning kick in. The lava on the ground will hurt anything that walks over it. The new enemy uses this weapon on you and it sucks just as much for you to get set on fire.

If you already have a version of Duke 3D then either get this when it's on sale or get it if you really want another episode of Duke 3D.

Camera Obscura would have been more accurate, but the game would have sold even less than it did had it been called as such.

I've actually got this game on my 3DS shelf. I should have played it back in October. I forgot I had it! :?

Forget again. It's the one blemish on an otherwise fantastic series (though I haven't played 3 or 4 yet), but damn, what a blemish it is.

Also gonna echo Popo; I've got the new Duke Nukem 3D release on PS4 and it is utterly fantastic. I'm a bit partial to the somewhat lackluster Saturn release since I have such a deep love for the Saturn, but 20th Anniversary World tour is absolutely the way to go.

I'm still bummed out I couldn't get into Fatal Frame 3 at all. Seemed fantastic other than the horrible pacing. It was a lot like Silent Hill 4 where you repeatedly are forced back to some base/hub, the main characters home. Then she goes to sleep to go into the nightmare/dream which is basically the new mansion / main portion of the game. I only played 2-3 hours worth but it felt like I jumped back and forth 20 times. Super stop-and-go, and it didn't really have the crazy surreal madness that Silent Hill 4 has to keep me interested enough to power through.

Still not sure if I want to get 5 on the Wii U or not, looks solid though but they probably peaked at 2. Which has aged very well, just replayed it last year or so and it was incredible.

The Wii remake of 2 is definitely the best version of that if you have access to it (it's pretty rare). You DEFINITELY need to get 5 on Wii U. It's absolutely fantastic. 2 was incredible, but IMO, 5 is even better.

5 is better? That's a tall order. I still love the original, but the difference in quality between 1 and 2 is insane. 4 looks kind of whatever to me.

Too lazy to do Wii modding/importing so I'm not sure I'll ever get around to those versions lol. I want to get the Xbox port of 2 though, think it has a first person mode and some other extras.

Yes you can play the whole thing in first person on the Xbox version.

Origin decided to put this on 50% sale so I picked it up. I knew the campaign was short and I was uninterested in the multiplayer, so I didn't want to spend the full $60 on it. But for the $30 I spent? Totally worth it.

The campaign tells the story of an assault on an enemy planet that turns out to be far more heavily defended than expected; this is due to some secret weapons research they're doing that you eventually have to stop. You start off as a bog-standard infantry but very quickly have to take over as the pilot of one of the mechs when his pilot dies. The mechs are equipped with a sophisticated AI which makes them a full character in their own right; at least yours is. The characterization is your standard "overly literal robot" but it works well. Many times you are given the opportunity to respond to things the AI is telling you. Usually these fall between some sort of joking tone and some sort of mission focused tone. But the other option is to not say anything at all. So it's up to you if you want to humanize your partner or not, which is a nice small touch.

The game is split about 70/30 between on foot and in mech. On foot you have some parkour stuff available to you and you're encouraged to keep moving and mow through things quickly. They wisely set up a separate checkpoint system for the platforming, as there are a lot of death pits. If you fall into one of them you'll immediately respawn right before the jump. Actually dying to bullets brings you back to a more standard checkpoint. So frustration averted there. The gunplay is solid and fortunately you only need iron sights for the sniper rifles and one burst fire rifle that's bad anyway. The rest accurately fire from the hip. Considering the nature of the game it felt like the iron sights were added because people expect them after the popularity of Call of Duty. I don't think they have a place here. The only thing about combat that pissed me off was enemies can quick melee you and it hurts. When I learned FPS's melee was terrible and a last resort, whereas now melee comes out fast and is better at killing people than guns. Damn kids.

The mech combat has a heavy feel to it that definitely makes it stand apart from the on foot movement. You get a wide variety of loadouts and can change between them on the fly, which is really nice. You'll probably find a couple you just like overall and then switch between them as needed given what you're facing. All boss fights are against enemy mechs, and what makes them bosses is that they have the same health as you do, whereas normal mechs have less health. So it's tough but fair and forces you to use your abilities and terrain to the fullest. I do think Hawken did mech combat a little better for the FPS style; they added in just a touch more emergency mobility whereas Titanfall is just two dashes stored up. That said, Hawken is an F2P multiplayer title, so for single player FPS mech combat Titanfall is the only game in town.

The campaign doesn't overstay its welcome. I could have used a few more mech segments but I wouldn't want any more on foot segments; the game had shown me all it was going to show me and any more on foot levels would have been boring.

Definitely a solid title for what I spent.
