Devil's Third is very rare and went out of print basically instantly. Which makes it an even more hilarious collectors item, how I dropped like $50 on that thing. If you miraculously somehow see it in a store or pawn shop for under $50 you should grab it.

I think everything Itagaki does is pretty good. Dead or Alive was a little more serious under him back in the day, Ninja Gaiden Xbox and the sequel are awesome. He didn't do 3, but the Razor's Edge version is awesome. I thought it was amazing. He was long gone from Tecmo by the time Yaiba came out, which wasn't even developed by Team Ninja I believe. So yeah I couldn't link him or Team Ninja to that turd... I spent $7 on that and want that $7 back!

At least Nioh looks amazing and is Team Ninja making a comeback. Hope to get to that one soon.

Bionic Commando. Still an amazing game. Even the bad localization doesn't do much to mar the experience. Swinging around has quite the learning curve, but once you get it down, you're (mostly) golden. There are some tricky bits towards the end, but nothing too harrowing, and you'll encounter plenty of enemies on the world map to keep you rolling in continues. Capcom was on their A-game here, and the tight programming elevates it well above stuff like Strider. Strangely enough, it came out before that, so they clearly had some talented programmers on staff before Strider came out.

Adventure Island II is done. It's the last NES game I've actually picked up; I played on the EverDrive, however. I'm pretty sure I could get through the game legit, but my patience wasn't letting me, so I did use save states from time to time. I figured out a decent trick in the bonus rooms to get extra lives as well, which is why I'm confident I could slide through. Still, it's a pretty frustrating game. Unlike Mario games, the impetus is to always push forward because the timer is tight, and you have to keep grabbing fruit to stay alive. This means that the primary way the game kills you is by getting you in a rhythm then throwing an enemy at you that is off the beat, or by making you play cautiously enough that you're going to die from timer expiry. For such a simple game, it actually makes for a rather interesting push-pull dynamic between careening ever forward and slowing up enough to not die by hitting an enemy.

Anyway, I like the game for what it is. It won't challenge Mario, despite some mechanical similarities, but it still resides squarely in the "good" category.

33. God of War (PS3)
34. Bad Apples (Android)
35. Sonic Mania (Switch)

Got a lot of catching up to do! Let's kick this off right!

Sorcery! - This is a Lone Wolf style choose your own adventure rpg for Android devices made by Steve Jackson. The game features a cool spell system and a map that helps you visualize the paths you are taking. It is just part one of a multi-part story! Loved it! BOOM! NEXT!

Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - This game is an absolutely huge improvement over the original dark forces. This FPS introduces force powers, lightsaber duels and a light/dark morality system. I am digging the cheesy FMV sequences and the acting is so bad it is good! The levels have been greatly improved over the original, with branching paths and a lot less arbitrary puzzles. What does bother me though is the plot. They did everything they could to squeeze Kyle Katarn into the Jedi role and it is laughable, especially the endings. There is no real end and if you go to the dark side, it is absolutely bonkers! Good times!

Mark Kart 8 Deluxe - New battle courses! Loved it! NEXT!

God of War - So I have always been prejudiced against God of War. I wrote it off as a mindless over-the-top button mashing brawler that did nothing to advance the genre. I was wrong. As the game began, my heart sank when there was a cheesy sex QTE. This groan-inducing monstrosity led me to believe that we were in for a teenage, sex-obsessed, "her-de-hurr... boobs," experience. Thank god they didn't keep that nonsense up though. First off, let's talk about QTEs. People complain that God of War is filled with QTEs.... it isn't. Certain enemies, when weakened can have a QTE sequence engaged to earn either health or magic instead of experience. Not mandatory, but helpful if you need those respective attributes refilled. Next, boss fights that use QTEs. Outside of the very first boss fight, QTEs are done 2 more times through the entirety of the game and again, only in small condensed moments. They aren't bad, they aren't all over the place.

Now let's talk about button-mashing. There isn't any. Many enemies require you to use a certain type of combo to break things like shields, or to bounce them up in the air so you can combo them. A lot of enemies require you to be patient and actively punish button mashing. There are a variety of combos that are fulfilling to use and late in the game, you are absolutely encouraged to experiment to find better and more long-running combos. The combat is fun and engaging.

Then, there is the visuals. I think that the most striking thing for me about the game is its use of visuals to create these stellar, grandiose visuals. Set pieces are enormous and well designed, using great camerawork to accentuate the sheer scale of the world around you. Everything looks clean and easily visible, not clouded with a bevy of grit and vines that seem to mesh the environment into one big old mush. I love the visual style and how it is presented. God of War was a lot of fun and very much deserving the praise it received and it still stands the test of time!

Bad Apples - Phone game knock off of Cards Against Humanity. It is stupid, but fun.

Sonic Mania - What an absolute joy to play! This throwback to the classic 2D era of Sonic is an all-encompassing love letter to the franchise, throwing in references to every sonic the hedgehog game imaginable. It plays well, we all have been talking our heads off about it and it is deserved. I love special stages and the Sonic CD UFO chase style. I love the fact that a debug mode is hidden in there and is a blast to mess around with; a feature that I overdosed on in Sonic CD as a kid. It isn't perfect, but no game is and those who genuinely enjoy 2D Sonic will love the game.

September:
75) The Mafat Conspiracy (NES) (5.0) (9/1) (~1.5 hours)

So the first Golgo 13 game was pretty rough. This is a step in the right direction, but it could still use some work. The game trades on multi-genre action, but manages to be thoroughly "meh" in all of them.

The main sequences are simple, Rolling Thunder-esque levels. They're not too bad overall, and probably are the best part of the game. You also get some 3D maze segments, which are a pain if you're not mapping things out. Seriously, have some paper on hand, or get something off the 'net. You'll have a few occasional encounters with enemies that are a bit like the shooting in Snatcher.

Once you get through all that, you have the occasional Rad Racer-style car chase scenes. They're also iffy in their implementation. And last, but not least, the sniper segments. You'll be given a shot to take, and you have to adjust for the wind to make it.

Sprinkled throughout the game are cutscenes that set up the story. If there's anything I've learned from all my NES playing days, it's that almost no one outside of Tecmo actually did dynamic, exciting cutscenes. The Mafat Conspiracy proves no exception, being rather dull overall, even while it tells a rather mature plot for the NES.

I should also mention that the escape sequence at the end is pretty brutal. You better have mapped things out, because you'll have to navigate the two mazes you already did and a few side-scrolling segments in only five minutes. Whee! I scraped by with about ten seconds to spare.

Sometimes, games that try to mix genres end up better than the sum of their parts, but sadly, this isn't that game. Give it a shot if you're completely out of the top-tier stuff.

Fable II (Xbox360)

Donkey Kong Country - It may not have the level design of the 2nd game or the mechanics of the 3rd, but it still stands out as one of the most enjoyable and best aging games of all time. I still remember when this game was the demo unit for the Super Nintendo bundles they sold at Sam's Club back in the mid 90s. I'd stand and play for ten or twenty minutes while my mom shopped. The visuals and the music never ceased to amaze me.

Fable II is really, really good. In a lot of ways, it's what I wished the Elder Scrolls games were. The game can be as long or as short as you want it to be and the way that the world actually reacts to your choices and actions is something that I don't think I've ever seen in another game. The subtle, sarcastic humor of the game is also a real stand out. If I had any criticisms, it'd be that the pacing of the storyline can be a little weird. When you stop and think about it, the main plot really only has like 4 chapters - it's the ancillary things that make the game feel robust and complete.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Wolfenstein: The New Order for PS4. On "Can I Play, Daddy?", to get the hang of things. Currently replaying on "Don't Hurt Me."

Can't wait to get The Old Blood, which I hope to beat in time to get W2: The New Colossus.

Was pretty disappointed with The Old Blood, honestly. Have fun with that final boss too...

Sonic Mania - PS4

Very meh on Sonic Mania. I don't like the new stages. I HATE the new bosses. They're all terrible, especially that pandering garbage that is the Puyo Puyo boss fight. They should just be embarrassed for putting that in the game.

I also don't understand why the game can't save between acts. I never was a fan of Sonic CD so I wasn't happy that they carried over the special stages from that game here for the Chaos Emeralds. Those stages are garbage, absolute garbage.

Sonic & Knuckles is my favorite 2D Sonic, and playing Sonic Mania hasn't changed my opinion on that. I think Generations is a better game too, just don't play it on PSNow. It runs terribly on that service

Mania feels like a bunch of no talent hacks trying really hard to outdo the big boys. Sonic in 2D was perfected on the Genesis and no one is ever going to outdo those games.
