For a lot of people, I'm not sure how positive an endorsement that is

The only Shantae I've played was the one on DSi, and I didn't really care for it. The bosses were pretty fun, but it was SUCH a pain to just find where to go next. I gave it a good go, but I eventually just gave up. That was like, back when it came out though, so it's been QUITE a few years since I've played it. Perhaps I shall have to give it another go one of these days.

It captures the unevenness of the game, I think.

It does, and though I think that might be a little harsh to Shantae...

Yeah, it is a bit harsh, because the dungeon areas are actually quite good. Much more interesting overall than Simon's Quest's mansions. I wonder if there's a better comparison out there. Zelda II? Faxanadu?

(I should also note that I like Simon's Quest, despite its issues.)

World of Final Fantasy is a shounen as fuck Pokémon clone that is a celebration of the history of the Final Fantasy series that actually manages to avoid being just a bland crossover game. It does that through its heart and ends up being an enjoyable romp for old fans.

The story could be ripped from "So You Want To Write A Shounen Series?" Parentless kids who jump at the chance for adventure? Check. A dimwitted headstrong male lead? Check. A smart and thoughtful female lead? Check. A cute sidekick? Check. A discovery of some fell influence on a seemingly peaceful adventure world? Check. A shocking late game plot twist? Check. Amazingly hammy voice acting (at least on the JP track)? Check. The game even has an animated intro that wouldn't look out of place on a shounen anime, and the ending is also influenced by anime ending videos (though this one is in full pre-rendered CGI). The game is not shy about being what it is, and that ends up being one of its strengths.

Gameplay wise there are a lot of cues taken from Pokémon. You're going to want to build up a team of captured Final Fantasy monsters. It even involves throwing a ball at them that pulses three times then does one additional animation when they're caught. Where things get more interesting is that you first have to put the enemy into a capturable state. The requirements for this vary from monster to monster. Sometimes it's just whacking them, but other times it might require hitting a particular element or inflicting a status ailment. A few even involve casting beneficial spells on them. These can be layered; an enemy that needs fire cast on it can have multiple fires cast to boost the capturable effect; this increases your odds of successfully imprisoning them. Once you've got your monsters you can grow them as they gain experience. You're given a grid of nodes akin to the sphere grid from FFX, where you spend SP to gain nodes. These can be stat boosts or abilities. You also can unlock the ability to transmute the monsters into larger forms. So a Baby Tonberry can later become a Tonberry and then a Tonberry King. Stat boosts and some abilities will transfer between these forms (and you can freely change between forms at save points), while other abilities are locked to a given form. Combined with the stack system this ends up causing you to not just have One True Form for your monsters.

The stack system is the other interesting thing this game does. You start with your two protagonists in battle, who can be in either their normal form or chibi form. You can then form a stack of up to three units for each of these two battle slots. The stacks are in the form of a large unit, then a medium on top of that, then a small on top of the medium. Normal form is large, while chibi form is medium. When stacked the units combine their stats, so it behooves you to get a full stack as soon as possible. Mid battle you do have the option of unstacking, giving you three turns instead of one, but each turn is weaker. You also can get knocked out of your stacks by certain attacks. Enemies also have the ability to stack up. Another advantage of stacking is that you can form compound abilities based on who is in your stack. For example, if two units in a stack have Fire, then you gain Fira. Or if two have Fira you gain Firaga. Some skills can only be gained through this mechanism. It adds another wrinkle to how you form your stacks.

Progression through the game is pretty standard FF style dungeon crawling. In another nod to Pokémon there are several "HM" abilities that are either required to progress or needed to get bonus items. Required abilities tend to have a capturable monster in the dungeon with that ability, and the abilities tend to be the first thing you can unlock on their skill tree, so if you didn't plan ahead you usually aren't screwed. Two other progression blocks are Gimme Golems and Puzzle Pedestals. Gimme Golems block the path until you bring them some useless key item found in a chest somewhere else in the level. It's mostly a way to enforce you to explore the entire level. Puzzle Pedestals usually block the way to bonus areas, though the first one is required to proceed. These will have some requirement, like "Build a stack with at least 50 Earth Resistance and 5 Weight". You then put together up to three monsters in a stack that meet those requirements.

My main complaint is that the combat ends up being fairly bland compared to other Final Fantasy games. There's not a whole lot of strategy outside "hit elemental weakness", and you don't get access to some of the more fun abilities from previous games. There's also an AP system for using abilities which slowly recharges every turn but carries over between battles. So for a while you get to a point where battles take a while because you can't quickly kill enemies due to lack of AP on successive battles. Right about the point where I was really getting frustrated by this I unlocked an ability on one pair of monsters I had that has me start each battle with full AP at the cost of my AP regenerating slower. This made dungeon crawling much better, as I could pull out my heavy hitters every battle. It did make boss battles a bit more cumbersome, but fortunately the game has a lot of ethers available, so I could just spam those.

Image

After the obnscene amount of zombie slaughtering fun that I had playing Dead Rising 3 back when I first got my Xbox One, I was STOKED when I saw the announcement for Dead Rising 4. I ended up inadvertantly breaking my rule of getting all non-Wii U multiplats on PS4 (nothing against Xbox One, I just think the PS4 runs smoother and has a better controller) because I didn't know that Dead Rising 4 was only a timed exclusive until Amazon had already shipped my pre-order, but whatever, that's fine. It looks good sitting next to Dead Rising 3 on my shelf anyway.

Image

Dead Rising 4 takes place in Willamette, Colorado, the same setting as the first game, and like the first game, features photojournalist Frank West as its protagonist. You go back to Willamette right around Christmas to investigate a renewed zombie outbreak - something that shouldn't be possible considering that federal law required everyone to be vaccinated against the zombie pathogen. From there, the mystery starts to unfurl as you use your wits, luck, and flaming swords/explosive sledgehammers to uncover the truth and fight off the zombie horde. The story is actually fairly well written. It didn't ensnare me quite the same way that Dead Rising 3 did, but truthfully, I think the narrative is much better crafted and cultivated in Dead Rising 4. There are certainly many areas for improvement, but the plot definitely had enough meat to keep you interested.

Image

Let's start with the good. Graphically, the game looks quite good. It's got a decent (albeit irritating after a while) soundtrack of classic Christmas tunes playing through the city, and the sound design for the weapons is great....mostly. There's a totally-not-a-lightsaber red laser sword you can find that makes sounds good enough to flirt with a Disney copyright. There are some flaws, however. With the sledgehammer-with-grenades-tapped-to-it pictured above, for example, sometimes you get a good, meaty BOOM while other times you may get a silent explosion. The overall sound design is good, but it definitely feels like there were some loose ends that could have stood another month or two of polishing before release (and this is after the ~12 GB update....).

Image

Now, unfortunately, we must address the not-so-good. The game plays very much like Dead Rising 3, but unfortunately, it feels just...less. I don't know how better to describe it but "less." The vehicles are cool, but they're much less entertaining and outlandish. The weapons are awesome, but they're less diverse and less ridiculous. The costumes and outfits are great, but they feel a little less goofy. For a game that's built almost entirely around the premise of "kill zombies in ridiculous fashions," that's a huge deficit. If this is your first Dead Rising game (or at least if you haven't played Dead Rising 3), then you're in for a treat, and you'll probably nothing wrong with the weapon, vehicle, and outfit diversity. If you HAVE played Dead Rising 3, however, then you're still in for a great time, but be prepared to be a little bit let down.

Image

My biggest problem with Dead Rising 4 is not the intermittent sound cut-outs (although that's annoying) or the relatively lackluster weapon and vehicle selection (although that's disappointing) but the infestation of bugs at the end of the game. With the exception of the aforementioned sound glitches and a few random bugs where I got stuck on some invisible barrier in the middle of the floor, I didn't really encounter any noteworthy bugs in most of my playthrough. That all changed in the last case. I hit some MAJOR bugs in this one. At one point, I'd randomly fail a chase mission after clear it in time, if I paused the game, it would CHUG at about 10 seconds per frame (yes, you read that right) until I unpaused it, and the game completely crashed on me as soon as I beat the final boss. Fortunately for me, it did save the checkpoint after killing the boss, but the game refused to launch for a good ten minutes after crashing. Even power cycling the Xbox didn't help; I was just stubborn and kept trying to launch, and it eventually worked. After all that, the cut scenes would absolutely churn, going at - like the pause menu - a good 10 or 15 seconds per frame. I eventually got through it all, but it definitely took me a good hour to get through what should have been fifteen minutes of cutscene and gameplay, and that's without factoring in the crash and refusal to launch.

Image

I enjoyed Dead Rising 4. I really did. It was a bit disappointing after the near-masterpiece that was Dead Rising 3, but I truly did have a great time playing it. That's why it pains me so much that the performance is so horrendous at the end of the game. That one issue really leave a sour aftertaste for an otherwise great game. I definitely recommend Dead Rising 4, but I'd recommend waiting for some more patches or (what I wish I had known was an option) waiting for the Playstation 4 release in a year.

I figured TMNT was the best way to check out that joystick I just got from isiolia. Thanks again for that! This is the most legit experience I've had with TMNT in years. It's still going to take me a little time to adjust, though, too much gamepad in the intervening years! :)

EDIT: In honor of me finally figuring out which arcade game that was from my youth, a blast through Red Clash... which takes like three minutes or so before the loop. Assuming you survive, of course!

ARC = arcade? I was thinking I need to burn through some versions of the TMNT classics that I've never beaten, namely the Genesis game and the arcade versions of II and Turtles in Time.

Hyperstone Heist is largely Turtles in Time but not quite as good. Worth playing through, but don't expect Turtles in Time quality.

Yeah. I decided to go all three-letter abbreviations like GameFAQs or something. TMNT is one of my favorites, and if I ever wind up getting an arcade board, it's the first one I'm going for.

Hyperstone Heist is excellent, though, but it has a different feel from the SNES game. The best way to dominate in that game is use that thrash move. It's so ridiculously overpowered, and it's easy to pull off with the running shoulder attack, let the stick go neutral when you hit, then hit the attack button again. You'll nail it (almost) every time.

Also, the arcade game is far superior to the NES port. Konami did an admirable job bringing it to NES, but the arcade version is a whole different level. Thing is, the NES version could have been better if the stun-pause were a little better on enemies. You can swipe at them, but you can't keep them stun-locked. You can do slightly better than that on the arcade game. But then, there's also that wicked jump-slash attack in the NES version, so finding a rhythm with it is fun, too. :)
