17. *NEW* TMNT Turtles In Time - Arcade (August 10)

In a Together Retro first, I was able to find the actual arcade cabinet for this month's TR, Turtles in Time. I have only seen this cab one other time, and I am well versed in the SNES port. There was a lot that home version added, and I was a bit disappointed in the length, but the game was still great and I burned through a ton of lives to get to the end.

January-June (the first 50)
Commander Keen Episode 1: Marooned on Mars - PC
DLC Quest - PC
Live Freemium or Die - PC
Borderlands 2: Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt - PC
Marvel vs Capcom 3 - - PS3
Borderlands 2: Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep - PC
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - PC
Street Fighter IV - iOS
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R - Vita *new*
The Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim - 360/PC *new*

TOTAL: 60

Games Beaten: 2012 2011 2010

GGAC+R is another fine Vita fighter. I don't like it quite as much as BlazBlu:CSE, but the same attetnion to visuals and speed is present. There's a very strong argument to made that the Vita already has the best handheld fighter library ever.

Skyrim I started on the 360 and then migrated my save to the PC about 1/3 of the way through the main quest. This is the first TES game that I managed to sink more than 5-6 hours into (I spent about 30 to defeat the last boss), and I credit that largely to the vastly improved combat (especially archery) and the gorgeous visuals that made taking in the sights a lot of fun. In the end, there are a lot of things I liked and plenty I didn't about the game (e.g. most of the boss encounters, including the final one, were far too easy), but it is certainly a memorable and well crafted experience that I'm glad I had. I can see messing around with it more in time and also picking up the DLC when it gets cheap on Steam.

Devil May Cry (HD collection)

I've beaten this game more times than I can count and it just never gets old. The bosses in this game are some of the most well designed in the genre. I love absolutely everything about this game, the music, the visuals/art style, the terrible story, and of course the gameplay. The gameplay (and pretty much everything) has aged incredibly well and still holds up as some of the best.

I did a clean run and went through all three modes, and wound up with the platinum trophy which was cool. Dante Must Die was pretty much as intense as I've always remembered it being, but also as rewarding. Of course, after clearing Dante Must Die mode I had to go through with Super Dante and wipe the floor with everything for a final run before moving on to DMC 2, which I am not very excited about. I don't hate the game, and usually defend it even, but it is such a step down from the original.

I'll take this rare opportunity to post two updates in one day, since I beat both Skyrim and this game today. :)

I only really like the 2D Zelda games, and so Oracle of Ages, which was new to me and which I played for the Summer Challenge, was a nice reminder of how much I enjoy these titles in the the series. I ended up having to use a guide pretty heavily for the last 1/3 or so, which means that there was a little more "trade this for that...and across time" than I would normally like. Still, I found the dungeons to be well made, the variety of enemies to be healthy, and the challenge to be fair. It's also a very polished title with nice sprite work, sound, etc. Playing it on the 3DS was a treat. I'm sure at some point (probably not soon) I'll play the companion game, but for now this has succeeded in greatly whetting my appetite for A Link Between Two Worlds.

I love love love the DMC games, and consider DMC3 my all time favorite game. I have this collection but have only spent enough time with it to clear the first few levels of the first game. I need to spend more time with it! Since it seems you have the same love for the game(s), did you find any weird issues with the "upgraded" port?

I don't remember, did you play Link's Awakening? I think you know that LTTP is my favorite game of all time? That said, I thought Oracle(s) were great, but Link's Awakening is even better. It's seriously mind-blowing how close the GB hardware got to delivering the SNES experience. Amazing game. If you have not be sure to get the DX version (also available on 3DS eShop).
