Just think about it like you're Snoopy, and you've been forced to play Pilotwings.

Ya know what..... eff it, I'm gonna try this one out. Looks like it has a Asuka 120% Burning Fest vibe. Seems like there's a Super Famicom installment too!

I forgot to mention that all 11 girls' story modes have like, a minute or two of anime as a intro to who they are before the story mode starts proper. There's a VERY retro anime vibe to those that I really dug.

I think you're right about that Super Faimcom version though. I could swear I've seen it on lists before and just had no idea what to make of it. I hope you enjoy it :D

It's such a short tutorial. If you hated it then you would have hated the entire chapter because you clearly just hated the flight model.

Super Bomberman R is the first Bomberman game I've played since Bomberman 64. When I first saw the trailers and screenshots for this game, I got SUPER excited. It looked like the basic gameplay style of the old NES Bomberman but with the more modern art style and 1080p visuals. With a 52 level story mode (including boss fights) and online multiplayer, I was stoked for this game. After that, I was disappointed with this game.

Image

Let's get one thing clear - this is not a bad game. It really isn't. Unfortunately, it's not particularly "good" either. It's just sort of okay. There are five stages in the story mode, and each stage is broken into eight levels plus two boss fights. At the end of the second stage 5 boss fight, you have another two phase boss fight with the final boss. It's the typical mazes, power-ups, and gameplay you probably expect from Bomberman, and the little scenes sprinkled throughout the story mode are cute. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a match online. I don't know if there wasn't anyone playing when I was this morning or if they're doing server maintenance or what, but it couldn't find a game when I selected quick play.

Image

The gameplay itself is actually a good bit of fun, and it would be a fantastic game if it weren't for one big issue - the controls. There's been a patch released to fix some input lag issues, but I didn't start playing until after that update was released. I first started playing with the pro controller, but I soon moved to playing in handheld mode. The controls with the pro controller, using both the left control stick and the D pad, felt extremely slippery and imprecise. Using the separate directional buttons on the left Joycon certainly felt better, but at no point did the controls ever feel truly comfortable.

Image

Honestly, since I wasn't able to try the online play this morning, there isn't a whole lot left to say. The game's okay. It's not great, but it's certainly not bad. If you're a fan of Bomberman or want a good multiplayer game, then I definitely recommend it. If you're just the average Switch owner with no particular affinity towards Bomberman, however, I'd say pick it up if you find it on sale for cheap, but don't go out of your way for it. It's pretty good, but it's not amazing.

Sorry to hear that Bomberman R is not everything it should be. I have not played a Bomberman game since Super Bomberman 2 for the SNES. Is Bomberman 64 any good? I hear it released on the WiiU a couple weeks ago.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Bomberman 64 is a 3d puzzle game. It really is all about exploring an environment and solving puzzles. It plays unlike other bomberman games and some may like it for that reason while others will hate it for the same reasons.

The one and only bomberman every person needs to play is Saturn Bomberman.

I generally prefer Bomberman 94/Mega Bomberman.

I'm trying to kill time before Mass Effect Andromeda comes out and I don't want to be midway through a game when it hits; that's why I haven't touched Torment yet even though I've been super excited for it. So instead, here's another short FPS from the N64 days that's now on PC thanks to Night Dive.

Turok 2 stars a different Turok (the name is a legacy name) as he gets yanked into a platform in space by a chick named Adol who tells him some asshole named the Primagen is trying to break free from his prison and you need to stop him. As you start on this journey you also will start running into the legions of Oblivion (who will play a larger role in the sequel). Now, people who have played the first know that it was called "Dinosaur Hunter" even though you spent more time killing humans than dinosaurs. Well in this one there is zero human killing. And there is only a little bit of dinosaur killing in the first couple stages. For the most part you're fighting various humanoid monsters. Now, the enemy variety is actually pretty good; while they tend to fall into "melee guy" and "ranged guy", the ranged guys all have weaponry with different characteristics, so it doesn't just feel like reskins.

Your weaponry takes some core items from Turok 1 and then brings its own for the other half. One interesting thing is that most of the weapons consist of Gun and Gun+1. So you have bow and tek bow (which can fire the explosive tek arrows and zoom in), pistol and burst pistol, shotgun and gun that fires a solid slug that then explodes into shrapnel on hitting things and is absolutely devastating in close combat and breaks the explosive shotgun shells in half, plasma rifle and plasma minigun, and then several single guns (grenade launcher, rocket launcher, flamethrower, chakram, mine layer, and a couple non-lethal ones I never touched). With the exception of the plasma rifle and minigun, all the Gun and Gun+1 stuff ends up being redundant, as you always use the Gun+1 form. The rifle and minigun do share space, as the rifle is much better at long range and has a scope. The super weapon that requires you to collect all the pieces in this game is the nuke cannon, which is this huge thing that when you fire shoots out a shot that creates a sort of black hole that then explodes and heavily destroys all enemies. It's not really effective against the last boss, though, whereas Turok 1's version was amazing against the final boss.

Level wise you still have a system of needing to find keys that unlock later stages. Here it's as simple as 1 has keys for 2 and 3, those have keys for 4 and 5, and those two have all the keys for 6. The final boss is locked behind six keys which are found one in each stage. And this is where some of the problems with the level design come in. Except for the last one you need to backtrack in order to get all of these Primagen keys, as they are locked behind abilities that are gained in the last five stages. These abilities are incredibly under utilized and 80% of their use is to get Primagen keys, with the other 20% giving you some nice items. Stronger level design would have used them more to open alternate paths; hell, doing that might have made the backtracking less tedious.

But the real problem I found with the level design is that the levels are just too long. If you chopped the last fifth off of each level and put them together you could have one more stage to get through and have more reasonable stage lengths. The Lair of the Blind Ones is a particularly egregious level, as it's definitely the longest and has some nasty hidden areas that you need to do in order to complete the levels (the achievement for beating the level is even called "We don't need no stinking strategy guides"). Oh, that's a change I forgot to mention. In addition to collecting the keys for the next level and the powers to later get the Primagen keys, in order to beat a level you need to accomplish some tasks. This could be rescuing some NPCs or destroying some enemy facilities. If you get to the end of the level and have not accomplished these objectives then you get warped to the beginning of the level (so on boss levels you don't fight the boss). Honestly I don't think this ended up adding much. One thing I will say is that all the levels are very unique in terms of architecture and level layout. Whereas the Turok 1 levels tended to get pretty samey thanks to all using that jungle texture set here you have cities, caves, temples, a high-tech alien hive, swamp ruins, and a space ship.

Oh, and remember those enemies from Turok 1 which was a guy on top of a Triceratops that had guns mounted on it? In one section of one stage you get to ride one of those and wreck havoc.

1/31: Harmonia (Steam)
2/21: Yakuza 0 (PS4) *NEW*
2/28: Cooking Mama: Cook Off (Wii) *NEW*

Total: 6 games

I also beat Breath of the Wild pretty recently, but Yakuza 0 took a bit too much time to write so that will come later :P

Yakuza 0
I really enjoy a lot of aspects of Japanese culture (both new and old), so it’s only natural that I would be drawn to the Yakuza series. However, it wasn’t until Yakuza 0 that I decided to try it out. I had heard it was a good introduction to the series and it was coming out on my birthday, so I figured that this was the perfect time to finally try it out. Luckily for me, this game is great!

The game stars Kazuma Kiryu, a newbie yakuza who’s being framed for murdering someone in an important piece of property called the “Empty Lot”, and Goro Majima, an exiled yakuza who is given a chance to get back into the clan if he commits an assassination. You switch back and forth between the two every few chapters, and each character has their own story that seems unrelated at first, but eventually comes together in the final few chapters. Both stories are mostly presented in really well put together cutscenes, with interesting characters and a lot of yakuza politics. It can sometimes be tough to follow with the number of character names being thrown around (partially because I’m bad at names), but even when I wasn’t quite sure who was being talked about, nearly all of the cutscenes were interesting to watch. The game has a few different cutscene styles though, which is a little odd. There’s the highly detailed and voiced ones (for those important story segments), the ones that use in-game assets and voiced, the ones that use in-game assets but are NOT voiced (mostly for side stories), and ones that use the use the in-game assets but have this weird yellow tint on them and aren’t animated much. I can at least understand having the first three types, as I imagine that voicing the entire game would be a bit much, but the yellow tinted ones are a bit weird.

In between story cutscenes, the main thing you’ll be doing is beating up people. Kiryu and Majima each have three very different styles (six total) that they can use; a slower, heavy hitting one, a quick but less powerful one, and one that lies in between the two. You can switch between the three any time you want in battle, and you can upgrade each of them by spending money on upgrades or new moves with the upgrades connecting together in a sort of skill tree of sorts. Thankfully all the styles are very different from each other, and I was able to find a useful situation to use most of them. The only styles that I didn’t like using were Kiryu’s and Majima’s heavy styles, but apparently a lot of people like Majima’s heavy style, so that might just be me not playing as a slower character. One of the big aspects of the battles is this “heat” meter, which fills up as you beat people up and not get hit yourself. It has three levels, and when you hit a certain level, you can pull off a “heat action”. These are really good to activate since you tend to do a lot of damage with them. I’m kind of bad at pulling off any of them other than the really basic ones, but I think someone who is more skilled with action games would have a much easier time with that than me haha. So overall the battles are quick, satisfying, and a lot of fun. The one of the only negative things I have to say about them is that sometimes I would run into a lot of the minor guys a little too often until I learned the skill to throw money at them (which distracts them for a bit). The other minor gripe is that when enemies have guns, they can be pretty difficult for me to dodge. Luckily guns aren’t present too often, so I rarely did not enjoy beating up people.

When you aren’t doing story things or beating people up, you’re exploring, doing side stories (side quests with often funny character interactions), and playing various mini-games. When playing as Kiryu, you’re exploring a representation of Kabukicho Shinjuku, Tokyo and as Majima you’re exploring a representation of Dotonbori, Osaka. While I really can’t say for sure how accurate each of these areas are presented, they both feel a lot like they could both came right out of Japan. Dotonbori especially felt well represented to me, as I remember exploring that area during my trip to Japan. It was a lot of fun to me just walking around, looking at all the various details that the developers put into the environment. The mini-games and a few other minor things really tie well into this as well. There are two bigger mini-games (real estate for Kiryu and hostess club for Majima), and plenty of much smaller side things which include karaoke, toy car racing, disco dancing, fishing, calling girls on a date, eating at various restaurants, mahjong, watching soft-core porn, and many others. I didn’t too far into the real estate or the hostess club, nor did I try everything out, but a lot of what I did try was enjoyable enough for me to want to do some in between the story. The only thing that I really did not like from what I tried was the disco dancing. It’s a sort of rhythm game which I’m normally fairly good at, but it’s VERY picky on what timing it considers to be correct and what’s wrong. Honestly it’s quite frustrating to me.

I’m probably not explaining everything very well and I’m probably missing a few things, but overall I greatly enjoyed my time with Yakuza 0. It’s was such a fun time for me, with very few things that lessened my experience. When I finished it, I quickly put it on my list for potential game of the years. Unfortunately, then Breath of the Wild came out, which probably tops it for me, but I still think it’s an excellent game. I think that you should definitely try out if you like good characters, Japan, and some good action-packed fun.

Cooking Mama: Cook Off
While I was waiting for Breath of the Wild to come out, I needed something short and simple to play. I remember having fun with this game, so that’s what I decided to play. Unfortunately, I think I originally played this with friends, as I don’t think it’s that great of a single player experience.

Basically, you make various dishes, which are splits up the steps into very short micro games. These vary from ones that are in a lot of recipes like cracking eggs or frying, to more food specific games like crushing ice for snow cones or twirling pizza dough around. These were mostly fun for me at first, but one of my problems with it is that some of the micro games get repeated a ton and get kind of old very quickly. You could probably solve that by just not playing them all in only a few sittings, but a bigger problem I had with it was that a few of the micro games had a hard time picking up the motion controls. I found that micro games which partially or wholly involved moving the Wiimote towards the screen, such as rolling dough or mixing a batter, were really frustrating at times since they wouldn’t always register correctly. Since this occurs in a lot of the micro games, it really didn’t make for a fun time to me.

So, I don’t particularly suggest playing this by yourself. You could have fun with friends if you like laughing at each others mistakes, but otherwise I’m not going to be playing this again.
