41. Shantae & The Pirate's Curse (WII U)
Shantae & The Pirate's Curse is the best Shantae game, and it is easily one of the best "metroidvania" games as well. It is incredibly fun; the sprite work is incredible; it is full of secrets; it has great boss fights; and it is overflowing with personality. I never saw the "game over" screen, however, and my only complaint is that it is a bit too easy. (The Shantae games seem to get more fun and easier with each iteration.) Finally, the Wii U version makes good use of the Wii U gamepad's second screen, and I recommend that version of the game to anyone interested in playing it.
Shantae & The Pirate's Curse also references the first two Shantae games often, and while playing its predecessors is by no means necessary to enjoy the game, I am glad that I played through the trilogy in order. (A lot of the enemies in Shantae & The Pirate's Curse are updated versions of enemies from the GBC game; so, I knew how to defeat many of them. Moreover, there is a secret area that uses some of the background graphics from the GBC original.) Although Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero looks like it will be very different from Shantae & The Pirate's Curse, my children and I are still very excited for it, and I will probably pre-order a copy of the game later this month.
