Let me rant at DVD editions

Post by Erik_Twice »

So one day you decide that you want to buy a movie. You walk down the store and surprise! There are lots of different editions! Which one do you buy? Guess wrong and you will regret it later.

I'm not even talking about stuff like Metropolis, a logistical nightmare of tracking down the most complete edition with the correct speed and all that stuff.

First of all you can't trust boxes. I remember I found a Woody Woodpecker DVD set in London for cheap. The box showed me it contained 75 shorts, including commentary and lots of other characters. Then I played it and found a crappy version with only 28 shorts inside. No difference other than a very small number indicating total lenght. No commentary even though there's a disclaimer about it.

And then you often face the choice between two different editions with no indications about what they include and what they don't. I have seen over three different editions of Brazil and two of The Brave little toaster. Which one do you pick? It's impossible to guess, it's random because the internet is very unreliable about this.

So, anybody else have the same pet peeve? Who bought Lord of the Rings only to discover it was a 4:3 version that cut half of the frame?

I did a tap dance a while back with various versions of Ironman, Indianna Jones and Transformers. So many different store exclusives.

Although Target had a nice book with the latest Indy movie.

My old rant:

Time to rant. Hate so many various exclusives Target has one, Best Buy and Wally-mart another. Wally-mart bonus extras usually packed in with just the Full Screen version only. Frustrating! To get all those bonus extras, one has to buy 3 different copies of the same movie. Look at original Transformers, I know crappy story but great special effects.
Buy now or wait another 6 months for the Directors Cut? Bawa, Ha, Ha Ha, Ha now I need to be sent to the Psychiatric ward.
How many bought AVATAR (Not me) and will head explode when the extended version comes out?

OTHER ISSUES

The stupid eco cases with all the holes.

I noticed a lotta newer moves are NON-ANAMORPHIC, maybe trying to push consumer to buy Bluray?

This should solve most of your problems. It's especially good at providing info for people who import movies as well

FWIW with Brazil the correct answer is the Criterion version. :P

But yeah, I know what you mean. I've bought Serenity and Memento twice because I bought the regular DVD version only for there to be a super deluxe version later. Though in your case with really old cartoons it seems to be more of a mess.

You think that's bad, I have Serenity on standard, special edition, UMD and Blueray

But that's just cause I like the movie, in general though, I hate "double dipping", which is when a company keeps re-releasing a DVD to get people to keep buying it over and over again. Some movies have had so many re-releases and special editions it's ridiculous

I like Blueray for this reason as a lot of movies get so much content crammed into one that you're basically getting a special edition by default. There is no "standard" edition, and with all the stuff that blue rays have to have to justify the high asking price, I think it's going to get hard for companies to keep up with the double dipping bullshit

I have a newfound love for commentaries! Do you know that feeling you get at the end of a movie, just wishing for a sequel? When I get that, I turn to the DVD release and the director's commentary. It makes the movie watchable at least one more time than it would be watchable without it (because movies do get old after a while), and they're fun because you can see things you didn't see before.

I don't bother with them much now, but I used to love DVD commentaries. Robert Rodriguez's movie commentaries are like taking a film making class at home and he emphasizes how to make movies on a budget, which is great for young independant film makers. Ronald Moore's Battlestar Galactica commentaries were great for explaining a lot of what goes into writing the stories, often even admitting when he was just making stuff up as he went along. His frankness was surprising to me. Evil Dead 2's commentary with Bruce Campbell is one of the funniest I've ever heard

So yeah, commentaries are awesome

If anyone should be complaining, it's the Blade Runner nerds with 86 different versions of the movie.

Haha. Yeah...I've got the five disc set...

Anyway, I have this same issue as a major VHS fan. I collect new tapes every week and still find random 'limited or 'better' versions of films I want to own. In fact, I recently picked up two different copies of Mel Gibson's Payback because I've read they were so different from one another.

Also, DVDs made specifically for either widescreen or letterbox drive me insane. Please just put both in the same box. Please?
