AC Adapter Compilation

by ClaymoreClay Fri Jan 08, 2010 2:34 pm

Hey everyone. I have seen a few posts in technical help asking about AC adapters. I was thinking that maybe we could compile all the AC adapter specifications we know for old consoles. If you can please post the following: Voltage, Current, polarity (this is listed on the adapter by the symbol --(o-- ), and a picture of the adapter if you have one. Then maybe myself or someone else could put this into a pdf file.

The following consoles I believe require AC adapter: intellivision, colecovision, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Neo Geo Aes, Turbo Grafx, Sega Nomad, Sega Gamegear, Atari Lynx.

Those are all the systems that I can think of that use AC adapters. Feel free to post. If you know a console that requires an adapter that I didn't list feel free to post that as well.
Thanks!

Here are the specs I have.

Sega Genesis Model 2: Voltage is 10V DC at .85 amps (850 mA). The polarity is
neg. --( o-- pos.

Atari Jaguar: Voltage is 9V DC at 1.2 amps (1200 mA) The polarity is pos. --(o-- neg.

Sounds good. If we make a good list I can add it to the sticky Guides thread.
I'm parting with some duplicate Blu-Ray and DVD movies. Check out this thread if interested.

I can look at others tonight, the The Jag is exactly the same power brick as a Gen model 1. The mold is exactly the same as are the internal specs. Only the block of text on it is different.

Thanks guys, whatever information you can contribute will be great. Once we get most of the consoles out of the way I will compile it into a pdf to share will every one. I really think this information could help collectors.

Good idea Clay. You can grab a couple of adapter pics and specs from here.

You should also state what adapter from another console can be used, as this is useful for collectors with many consoles. If you need a pic or info let me know I have many consoles.
Consoles: NES, Famicom, SNES, GC, GB DMG, GB Pocket, GBC, GBA, DSI XL, N64, VBoy, NDS, 3DSXL, Wii, SMS, GEN+CD+32X, GG, SAT, DC, WS, WS Color, NGPC, XBOX, 360, PS1, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, 3DO, CD-I, NGCD, Actionmax, TG16+CD, TE, PCE-DUO, Odyssey2, Playdia, 2600, Lynx & JAG.

Hey, this is actually something I can contribute to a little just in case the PAL-European mainland power outputs are different.

Commodore 64 (EUR) - 4-pin DIN power connector, outputs both direct and alternating current.
9V ~ 1A Alternating current
5V - 1,5A Direct current

Atari 2600 (wooden finish, 6 switch, EUR) 2,5mm TRS jack connector
Output: 9V - 400 mA

Sega MegaDrive Model 1 & MegaCD (EUR) - Standard 5,5mm power jack
Output: 10V - 1,2A
pos. --( o-- neg.

MegaDrive Model 2 (EUR) - Standard 3,5mm power jack
Output: 10V - 850mA
neg. --( o-- pos.

NES & SNES (EUR) - Standard 5,5mm power jack
Output:9V ~ 1,3A
Alternating current

You should note the origin of these consoles. The US SNES has funky power jack that I've only seen elsewhere on a few laptops.

The amperage of a replacement plug can be higher then the device needs and it will not harm the system. Some systems will work on slightly lower voltage, but higher voltage should not be used. With the exception of the note on the US NES, AC and DC should not be mixed. 1000 mA = 1 A

Generation NEX
9v DC, 650mA
neg --( o-- pos

GBA SP Japan/US
5.2v DC, 320 mA
proprietary plug

DS Lite US
5.2v DC, 450 mA
proprietary plug

NES Model 1 US
9v AC, 1.3A
Note this is AC. The NES steps the power to 5v DC internally and pretty much any 5-9v DC with a plug that fits will work as long as it provides enough amperage. This is why you should never use an official NES power brick with anything else as it will fry, but a Genesis brick will work fine on a NES.

SNES Model 1 and Model 2 US
10v DC, 850mA
pos --( o-- neg - proprietary plug

Sega Master System US
9v DC, 1A
pos --( o-- neg

Sega Genesis Model 1, Sega CD Model 1, Sega CD Model 2 US
9v DC, 1.2A
pos --( o-- neg

Sega Genesis Model 2, 32X, Game Gear US
10v DC, 850 mA
neg --( o-- pos

Sega Genesis Model 3 US
10v DC, 300 mA
neg --( o-- pos

Sega CDX
9.5v DC, 1.5 A
neg --( o-- pos

Sony PSOne (mini) US/Japan
7.5v DC, 2A
neg --( o-- pos

NEC Turbografx 16 US
10.5v DC, 730 mA (I have been using a Genesis Model 1 power brick with no issues)
pos --( o-- neg

NEC PC Engine Core Grafx (blue) Japan
9v DC, ? mA (I have been using a random 500 mA power brick with no issues)
pos --( o-- neg

NEC DUO RX Japan
9v DC, 1A
pos --( o-- neg

Nos sure its worth noting down the N64, GC, and 360 with their proprietary plugs or not.

The ones I posted are all for PAL European mainland, I had it in there at first, but modified the first sentence before posting, sorry.
Our SNES adapter is identical to the NES and reads "FOR USE WITH (SUPER) NINTENDO ONLY" and does work for NES. I always fear breaking things by accident, so haven't tried the adapters on MegaDrive and the other way around.
