lcd monitors only provide good results if their native resolution is 640X480, else use a normal crt monitor.

1024X768, etc. monitors will upscale the 640X408 signal, and most often than not the upscale quality is bad in these lcd monitors. Please try before you buy! and/or compare with a crt!

I wonder why LCD monitors don't give you the option to letter-box rather than to upscale?

Some do, it's called 1:1 pixel mapping. My 23" Dell SP2309W supports it. Usually it's only available on more expensive models due to the image processor used in the screen. I assume it's simpler to just stretch the image to fit all the pixels than to map it to a specific portion of the screen with 1:1. I don't know the specifics though.

The setup is great. I myself recently bought a Dreamcast, and I'm loving it. You've convinced to try to pick up a VGA Box, because Shenmue looks great on the monitor.

I wish my monitor would play games in perfect aspect ratio like that. It's a 5:4 LCD, but instead of putting bars at the top and bottom (like you might expect), it always puts bars at the sides when I auto correct. Doesn't seem to knock off the game's aspect ratio though :S
Wish I at least had the option of adjusting manually :(
Either way, very nice setup, I'm sure you must enjoy it
