Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Showgirls is a terrible movie with a deep, and important, message about a capitalist society. It reached for the stars, tripped since it wasn’t watching where it was going, and fell face first off an embankment into a ditch.
…..
The last two movies I watched were two French mid-century Maigret films: Maigret Sets a Trap and Maigret & The St. Fiacre Case. Both are excellent, and Jean Delin is outstanding as the famous French detective. If you’re a fan of mysteries, such as Agatha Christie’s Poirot, I really can’t recommend them highly enough. Moreover, both are available for streaming, for free, through Kanopy.

It has a lot of bad acting (with stylized acting on top), but I found that on top of it having its deep anti-capitalist and feminist message, it also seemed to be a riff on Hollywood itself. The bad acting, comic relief, sexual tension, and other instances of it were so overblown, which I believe is one of the methods to do satire: to exaggerate aspects to show the absurdity of it.
I'm in the party that Verhoeven knew exactly what he was doing because he was pretty much THE satirical director while making it.

To me that's clear as clear can be. Same with Starship Troopers. I'll have to rewatch his other movies to make that judgment, but I think I felt similarly about Basic Instinct.

Some time ago I watched the recent Black Christmas remake. I enjoyed it.

I watched the movie The Eternals. I think the film could have been shot in a more interesting way. Many scenes were not dynamic.

Watched the Child's Play remake last night. It was okay but it should have been a new IP.

It is wild to me to see that this thread still exists.
Lordy.
Last movie I saw with my full attention span was Possesion (1981).
I don't think I have ever had my mind shift so radically from repulsion to adoration for what it achieved than what was on display here. Madness bottled for film, and a total masterpiece.

Don't that just look oh so tasty?
