So I'm in the mood to play something retro inspired. The thing is I LOVE pixel art, but somehow I feel that a lot of indie developers don't exactly get it always right and it can feel very cheap). Notable exceptions that I've played in recent years were Sonia Mania and Freedom Planet (say what you will about the gameplay, but the graphics were gorgeous with really well made pixel art imo).
So I'm here for suggestions for gorgeous pixel art games for modern systems (ps4, pc for now, since I don't own a switch yet). It doesn't really matter what genre.
Suggest me modern games with gorgeous 16/32 bit pixel art.

Well Shovel Knight defiantly comes to mind. Mega Man 9, 10 or Mighty Gunvolt is out there for the rock man fans. Others will say Retro City Rampage DX. Stardew Valley is also popular choice. Axiom Verge, Cursed Castilla and Super Hydorah are good spiritual successor of a retro series. Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (2 Plus) is always fun.

Pretty much anything by WayForward....but of those, i would go with Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse for both top notch gameplay and pixel art.

Owlboy sets the bar pretty high.
Some other options:
Undertale
Blossom Tales
Golf Story
Stardew Valley
Wild Guns: Reloaded

Owlboy has peaked my interest, especially since it's getting a physical release at the end of the month .
Isn't shovel knight an 8-bit themed game? .

Yes it is. So is undertale, but now we’re just splitting hairs, right.
Serious Recommendation: check out Saint for Wii. Saint is a retro 16-bit pixelated horizontal shoot ‘em up. It’s good fun. Maybe a little too easy for hardcore shoot ‘em up purists, but it’s got great sprite work.

Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown got PS4 versions, though they might be too high resolution to count?
Possibly the same for Ori and the Blind Forest or the modern Rayman titles, but they -are- very nice looking.
Code of Princess has a Steam version, and is kind of a spiritual follow up to Guardian Heroes.
Jamestown on PC if you never got into it.
While stylized, Hyper Light Drifter as well.

Yes, but if you really compare it to a real 8-bit game...it's more closer to 16-bit, especially with all that big sprites and colors.
You should also check out Heavenly Guardian for the Wii or PS2/PSN. It's comparable to Pocky and Rocky for the SNES.

Yeah, I do find it really odd that so many folks choose to emulate the NES look but then totally break the constraints the NES had. Don't go into such detail about how you want a specific look if you're not going to actually stick to it. Speak more broadly, then. Something like, "We wanted an 8-bit aesthetic without all the constraints," sounds better than, "We researched so much to be true to the NES," when it's a lie.
