Wild Guns, which is sort of like an off rails Sin and Punishment. I also liked Phalanx

I think it is an ok game and can be found cheap. It's real name is Super SWIV which sorta means Silkworm IV even though it isn't a real sequel or made by Tecmo. It was originally an Amiga game though was changed up for consoles.

I hated it. IMO it doesn't play well, the ship moves way too slow when all the enemies move way faster, and compared to either UN Squadron or Space Megaforce, felt like walking in mud. Seriously, play via emu if you're even considering buying it. I hated it. Cannot stress that enough. It is just crap...

If you want my copy of UN Squadron, you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

So as a guy who really doesn't play many shmups at all but still wants to give his SNES shmups a spin, what are some easy ones on the console to try out for me to get the hang of the genre?

D-Force? Raiden Trad? Imperium? What? Any recommendations to help me ease my way into the genre is appreciated.

If you import, Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie is really cool, and not too intimidating.

Gradius III isn't that hard either, at least on the SNES. I also quite enjoyed Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings, that one isn't too bad on the difficulty.

I generally don't import, and Aero Fighters is beastly expensive. I'm surprised to hear that about Gradius III though. I was under the impression it had a reputation for being brutally difficult.

I could breeze through Axelay when I was a kid. Super R-Type and Gradius III are not too hard either, but they do not approach Axelay's quality. Plus, this has got to be one of the coolest shmup bosses of all time:

That boss fight blew my mind the first time I played it.
