Identify a 90s arcade game

A friend of mine asked me to help him figure out the name of a coin-op which he used to play as a kid, but whose name he has forgotten. This is what he remembers:
- he played it during the late nineties but it may be older obviously
- the game was in Japanese
- it was a similar in style to Wonder boy
- the levels were: forest, factory, forest, Castle
- the level boss was always the same dragon, just getting stronger each time. He was poorly animated.
- the final boss was a sitting demon spitting fireballs
- there was a shop at the end of each level
- there were star, sun and moon power ups for your projectile
- there was a Cape power up to grant you an extra hit point, and a fairy power up
- midway through the 3rd level, you could get picked up by a bird that would take you to the end of the level
