Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
Welcome to SOTM 2015! We've got another great community-contributed calendar and lots more shmup goodness coming your way.
This month from TSTR we have the original DonPachi!
*INFORMATION*
MAME romset: donpachi.zip
Description: Donpachi (US)
Other formats accepted: PS1 (Japan), Saturn (Japan), PSN (Japan)
No differences across the versions as far as I know. Please use default difficulties on all versions.
Autofire: Not an issue here as holding down the button simply fires your more powerful laser shot.
Format: Name - Score - Stage - Max Hit - Ship - Version/Port
Thank you and good luck!

Nice. Prolly won't do anything for a couple weeks - but will be in the mood i'm sure by mid-Jan.

Hayul yeah. Gonna get down on this as soon as I get over being sick AGAIN.
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
Happy new year everyone!
Finally, a chance to really sink my teeth into this game. Gonna post a score early every month and again at the end after as much practice as possible to see how I improve.
Day 1:
Nyukki - 2,953,050 - 4 - 40 - C - MAME
Not familiar with level 4 yet. Nothing more annoying than dying with bombs in stock.

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
I am having a terrible time finding my Saturn A/V cable. Hopefully I can find it soon. May have to resort to buying one.

Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
DocHauser - 6,147,930 - 5 - 61 - C - ShmupMAME 4.2
This might actually be my best score on Donpachi. I tend to use up my bombs as much as possible, so I could probably improve that score by not bombing and getting a better end-of-stage bonus.
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
Heh. I see that the Shmups Farm hi-score table has a Top 70 and the lowest score is 6.24 million, so I guess my target for this month is to scrape into the lower reaches of the table...
Re: Shmup of the Month Club 2015 (January - DonPachi)
I've only ever played this for survival, so I'm quick to eat up my bombs too. Especially on bosses, since you get bomb stock refilled +1 at the beginning of the next stage if you're out.

Yeah, somehow I figured you'd like it. The one who suggested a shmup finds the word itself weird. I needed to swap out my previous quote.
But let me say I'm glad I decided to get you on board and it was also a good one to start our new calendar, because DonPachi's great. You can tell this is one of Cave's first games; it's got a lot of that 1990s shmup sensibility but it's just enough crazy to see the future of what shmups were going to be. A good mix of classic and modern right here, but lacks that visceral punch of DoDonPachi, which is something I don't mind at all. I felt right at home with this, as reflected in my first performance. Hit combos don't get as high as DDP, but they are still just as satisfying.
ExedExes - 3,054,730 - Area 4 - 38 - Type A - MAME
