Momocon 4 (08) - Free convention in Atlanta

Post by fastbilly1 »

Why would any of yall care? Well if your in the area it is a good way to spend a weekend. Also we have a retrogaming room which had two cube Pacman Vs and a 2600 running the entire weekend. This year I hope to add in some more fun consoles - three saturns, and two dreamcast from me alone, not counting arcade cabinets (which again I am attempting to get an Xmen 6 player). Anywho the info below if yall care:

Sigh, and March will be here before we know it. Thanks for the advance notice. I'll probably make it next year -- location, certainly, isn't an excuse for me.

AWA has gone to pot, so maybe this will take it's place for us NC folks. We used to have 24hr, all-nighters at a local college that this reminds me of. What's the square footage of the console gaming area?

Last year we had three videogaming free gaming areas: Modern, Rhythm, and Retro. Modern and Rhythm were both about forty by twenty, retro was twenty by sixty - in comparison they are a hair smaller than AWA's. But unlike AWA we have a separate room for tournaments. We may not have a separate set of consoles and games, but usually it is in another building (everything but DDR).

This year it is going to be alittle different, but I will have information on that soon. Mainly since between myself, friends, and several fellas from BYOAC, we may have an arcade aswell. All mame cabs will look like single game machines (or generic cabs) and they will only have games in them that we legally own - ie Samurai Shodown, Track and Field, Marvel vs Capcom, etc. Granted all this will be circumvented once I get around to doing that kitbox idea and those three saturns start rolling...but there I go on a tangent.

Luckily we are both a free con and in the Spring, it means less competition with others.

But to get back to answering questions:
You can count on it racket. In both the video and boardgaming areas.

Majors - see above. Though AWA's boardgaming is coming back around...maybe. I highly suggest it for atleast a day, we might not be worth a hotel room in downtown Atlanta. I also think that this year really might have been my last AWA. Though if a certain lady I fancy says she wants my help there next year, Ill be there at the drop of a hat. And yes I do know that is more information than you cared for.

durkada where are you based out of? Odds are Momocon 5 (09) will be in March and probably still at Tech.

What is AWA? I'm an ignorant. And AWA boardgaming? I'm a boardgaming whore, as it stands. Every week, some old friends and I get together to drink, play games, and drink some more.

Tech is no problem for me -- I'm 10 minutes away. I live near Mercer university, which, if you aren't familiar is around 285 and 85. Basically the Chamblee Tucker exit is the one I would take to reach my home.

It will be cool to meet some Racketfolks. Majors comes down, and thats two people I could meet off this board. I kinda got the impression, out of the 20 or so handles I recognize, none of them would be stuck in the south.

Now that is scary as all get out, I am near the Atlanta White House. Were not stalking each other are we?

AWA is Anime Weekend Atlanta, it was last weekend at the Galleria. I was asked to run more advanced boardgames for the con, but received mixed results. People offered to buy Dune off of me, but that was not going to happen for under $200. I also ran several games of Heroscape (by popular request) and Battlelore. But knowing another boardgamer in the area will be handy for some of my more crazy ideas in the near future. Were talking Man of War or Sky Galleons of Mars with foot long boats in a park... But if your at Mercer I will take it you already know of the Mercer Meeples?

Then again this also means that someone from the site gets to see my crazy ideas in person, that might be a bad thing.

When you talk about the Atlanta Whitehouse, do you mean that bizarre recreation of the Whitehouse on Briarcliff? That thing has always... disturbed me on some level.

Pity about AWA, and, again, my ignorance. Instead of being there, I was at Alchemy -- experiencing, eh... a certain badness. AWA sounds much better, in retrospect.

Yeah, I know of the Mercer Meeples. I show up on the blue moon -- probably about two or three times a year. Are you a regular attendee?

I could also be persuaded to assist with some of the arcade stuff at Momocon. I do collect arcade equipement, and have dedicated cabs for the following:

Crystal Castles
Food Fight
Paperboy (no side art, alas)
Dig Dug (cocktail)
Warlords (cocktail) -- probably my favorite of the bunch
and around 16 or so pinball machines.

With some luck I hope to get a Marble Madness before too long.

So, I'm also heavily into the Eurogames. But also enjoy the Ameritrash stuff (I have my own copies of Dune, Titan, Gunslinger, et al, and have been enjoying the Fantasy Flight reissues of Warrior Knights, Fury of Dracula, etc). I grabbed a set of the Heroscape stuff, but never actually tried to play the game. If you don't have a regular gaming group and want to play with myself and a few friends (again, alcohol will be involved), feel free to hit me up.

Cheers,
Jon

I am in several panels, and every chance I get I plug the site. But if you can make up a black and white flyer I can get them distributed. I already claim that a chunk of the retro room is donated by your site...granted this year most of it is.

durkada Ill pm you about local things, just to keep the topic "clean."
