Original Xbox - Making Very Loud Sounds
My original Xbox has recently started making a really loud and annoying sound. Sometimes it only starts doing it 5-25 minutes after turning it on. It's gotten so bad that I have even tried shaking the console itself (Which worked a few times, hehe) to make it stop. I really don't think it's the fan as I can hear the fan separately from the noise. If anyone knows what could be wrong, help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Original Xbox - Making Very Loud Sounds
It's probably the ball bearings in the fan. Over time they wear down and start to rattle. When the fan is spinning at several thousand RPM it can make quite a racket.

Do you know what version of the xbox you have? Mine is v1.0 and the GPU fan made a lot of noise. I took the fan off and replaced it with a heat sink. I used a Zalman ZM-NB32J North Bridge Heatsink with Sekisui #5670 heat tape. I also replaced the box fan and now my unit is super quiet.
Here's the heat sink that I used:

Okay, it's the small fan. I took it out, cleaned it, and screwed it back in really tight and it's still making the sound. When I disconnect it from the heat sink thing, it runs silently. Any idea why that is?

I believe on the newer revisions of the xbox, they did away with the fan and replaced it with a different heat sink.
Anyway, follow this guide: http://dwl.xbox-scene.net/~xbox/xbox-sc ... silent.pdf
I did the above except that I used Sekisui heat tape instead of the epoxy.
You can find lots of other tips by doing this google search "noisy xbox gpu fan -360"

Re: Original Xbox - Making Very Loud Sounds
Thanks for all the info, I think I'm gonna do that. I found that the fan hitting the metal was where the sound was originating. So for now, I just put pieces of duct tape under each screw hole of the fan to act kind of like shocks and it seems to be working so far. So until I get that heat sink, all I have to worry about now is my Xbox exploding into flames.

That's a clever idea.darthmunky wrote:I found that the fan hitting the metal was where the sound was originating. So for now, I just put pieces of duct tape under each screw hole of the fan to act kind of like shocks and it seems to be working so far.
I just searched through my emails. I bought my heatsink from Best Byte Computers for $7+ total back in May. Checking the website now, it seems that their prices have gone up.

I bought an Xbox 1.6a at my local thrift store and took out the DVD drive and heatsink and put them in my modded Xbox 1.0. It runs super quiet now and reads discs way faster.
