I see. So I guess the benefit of an animated png over a gif is that png's don't look grainy and have a wider range of colors?

Yup. You get as many colors as you would with a regular png. You can use transparency too, which gifs do not support as I recall.

They do, but just in that it marks one single color as transparent so you get stair step edges and halo ugliness if someone has a picture blending to a white background when they created it, but it is on a black background now for instance. I'm not sure if PNG does alpha channel blending so it can look nice on any color background or not.

PNG does support it. I found this out accidentally one day when I was doing some Doom editing. Inadvertently made my monster partially transparent.
