Re: Basic Genres (help me make a list)
I don't get it, action and adventure? So is that RPGs (adventure), SHMUPS (lots of action), FPSs (loads of action), platformers (you even considered this, but less action than FPS, even), along with just about every other genre imaginable.

in my head Bubble Bobble, Parasol Stars, Toki Tori -- these games are puzzle games. Agreed?
Puzzle Bobble is puzzle, but Bubble Bobble and Parasol Stars are more platformer to me. Toki Tori appears to be a bit more like Lemmings or Lost Vikings, which I'd consider puzzle.

I'd say it's a subcategory of Puzzle Games.

Pffft no such thing. Anything truly educational isn't a game. Everything else is just a game. Edutainment is a lie!

I disagree since most educational games tend to take from multiple genres. For example Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego games are educational yet are also an adventure games. Or those old mackintosh games like Oregon Trail are definitely not limited to just puzzle games.

I'd call Oregon Trail an Adventure game.
Re: Basic Genres (help me make a list)
I think Rhythm Games are separate from Puzzle Games. Most rhythm games have little to no puzzle aspect to them at all. The genres are similar in concept and style but they are still different.
I also think Shmups and Shooters are also very different. Just because they both involve shooting doesn't make them similar. Putting Raiden and Goldeneye in the same category of gaming doesn't really make a lot of sense. For example; Twisted Metal has shooting in it but I wouldn't call that a shooter.
I understand not wanting to get super technical and have all these sub-genres such as Survival Horror as you already stated but some of them have drastically different play styles.
Just my two cents.
