If my Wii dies one day and I need to switch to a backup console, I need to be able to transfer my save data to it.
In all reality, how often has this ever been an issue? In my decades of gaming before data transfer was possible, I never once ran into a situation where my console died while I still had any commitment to the game data associated with it.
It's always an issue. I never wanna lose my save files. I'll admit, some of them are trophies. A game that was already beaten but I spent hours and hours after that to get 100%. Or some games that have a date stamp on save files. It's nice to boot up a game after a while and look at the save files and think, "Wow, I haven't played this game since 2006," or such and such date.
It was less of a problem back when saves were stored on carts. At least each save file is kept with the game it belongs to. If you lose one, you only lose that ONE. Now that save files are all kept on the same storage medium (memory card, now internal system memory) it's more important. You wont just lose one save file, you'll lose them all.
There also likely wont be a way to hack the Wii Mini, so how will I play my WiiWare exclusives if my Wii goes down?
I like the way the Wii Mini looks, and I like that it has a top loading drive. It's no secret that top loading drives last a lot longer than front loading drives. If it had component output and an SD card slot, it'd be a no-brainer for me to pick one up and keep as a backup. But my better option would be to get a GCN compatible Wii as a backup. I'm never gonna buy component cables for my GCN, so there's that. And if my Wii ever goes down, I could transfer all my saves to the backup Wii. I could even hack it and keep all my VC and WiiWare games too.
