Shmup of the Month Club Polling

by pierrot Wed Dec 05, 2012 4:20 pm

Pay no attention to results behind the curtain.

Final tally for original poll:

Last year's: 1
noise's: 4
dunpeal's: 6

What this means: The following people should each PM bruno with three choices of shmup to be voted on.

I voted for noiseredux's idea. Here was my reasoning (original directed at DSH):

I like the idea of the group of us each getting a chance to pick one and encourage the rest of the group to get into it. I think it's great fun to get the big vote/discussion thing going on for TR. But I find SOTM smaller, and looser which is also fun. I like the idea of not spending a month arguing about titles but rather being given a syllabus -- whether it's one made by 11 of us, or one just made by bruno. I just think doing it 11 ppl rather than bruno alone will result in more variety. For instance you'll pick Crimson most likely (so a PC doujin) while I have my eye on Shiki2 ...I don't see these interesting picks winning out vote-wise if we just do a big dev vote like last time. And to be honest, I just think that whole voting process was overly laborious.

In short: I just think it'll be fun to see what each person comes up with having no criteria. Just a game they think is great and that they should share with the group.

I also voted for the noiseredux method. It has made sense in the bedroom, I see no reason why it wouldn't cross-over.

I liked the "Top Members Pick" at first, but then I went back to the old method because I felt it would single out people who maybe just played 1 or 2 months with us, but seeing as there's already a push towards that on the original thread and that Air Gallet and Varth would make a list like that with no argument (score!). Also, I think with DDP as this month's official TR, many people would much rather focus on scores/discussion on that and not also on voting out long lists of games. I'm with Noise's idea, let us who are regulars pick them but along the way let us also hear good suggestions from people who may not play as much as we 11 do, their opinions are just as valid.

I voted for dunpeal's method. Since before I started that thread, one thing I wanted it to be was something that everyone was in on together, so I am really behind the idea of voting for games as a group. I also really like noiseredux's idea though, as it's still everyone in on it together, although far more direct. So to me it makes the most sense to do a hybrid of the two methods, which is also a decision catering to both opinions.

Let the poll run for a few days and call it, everyone that cares will have voted by then. If dunpeal or noiseredux's method gets picked, I'm sure we can work out who gets what dev.

why would we have to limit devs though?

Even though voting by devs was originally my idea I had to go with noise's "imposing our will" idea
it'll be a blast to lynch each other each month when these games inevitably kick our asses.
and when your month comes up you can laugh maniacally.
on into the night.

I think that's what it comes down to... I think it'll be more fun to just be told "ok we're playing this." Even if I pick one month, that leaves 10 months that I'm being told -- you have no choice, THIS is what we're playing! Chances are it'll be stuff I didn't vote for, and I might be exposed to new games. Which I find more interesting than voting on stuff we all already know we have experience with.

really? You doubt people voted for games that they already know and like over games that were unfamiliar with?
