Sega Saturn Mod Chip Question - Japanese Saturn Models?

Post by ImportBoy »

Hi,

I'm looking to start building up a Sega Saturn collection. I bought the mod-chip and RAM cart from the store here. I've yet to buy my saturn system itself and have been looking around. From what I understand I need a 32 pin - with round buttons for the chip. I've seen plenty of these kind of used Saturns on e-bay.

However, I'd prefer to get a Japanese model since to me they look so much nicer and I have a sweet spot for Japanese electronics! I don't know which models, if any, are compadible with this mod chip. Does anyone here know?

These are a couple of the models I was looking at purchasing on - ebay.

Can anyone point me in the right direction! Thanks guys.

best arcade stick, best looking saturn. :D

I think it's a grab bag for modding japanese saturns, considering there are so many models. Considering grittykitty has a white saturn (the one included in the auction), he may know what kindof method will be used to add the mod chip. You should get a memory card as well. Only get an OFFICIAL Sega one. all the others suck.

Nice but a little to expensive right now, though I'll admit I was looking at the Sega Saturn Floppy Disk Drive and Printer/Word Processor combo :)

Yeah there are quite a few Japanese models to choose from buy from what I gather the main ones are the Grey and White models. The rest appear to be special editions or high end models with extras. I think the White one would probably be best - I'll have to do some more research.

I'm no expert, but i think the japanese saturn boards are more complex than just white model or grey model. I think each of those have several different models. Even with the US saturns there is some variation. I have two US Saturns with the round buttons that you'd think would be the same but they are very different inside. The one was easy to mod using the how-to's on this site, but they other required a lot of tinkering by a friend who knows more about these things than I do. They both work with the mod chip now though so I am very happy!
