Rom hacks worth playing?

Aside from the copious amount of fan translation the only rom hack i have played is Sonic megamix. Anyone want to recommend any games worth checking out for any system?

I can't remember the name of it but there is a hack of Link to the Past that was pretty damn amazing. I think it was "Legend of Zelda: Two Towers" or "Two Worlds" or something like that. Should be easy to google it up.

There are also some really good Super Metroid hacks out there.

Sonic Megamix is fantastic, but I gotta warn you that the vast majority of rom hacks out there, even many of the really good ones, are pretty much designed to be as frustratingly ultra-hard as possible.

I think you're thinking of "Zelda: Parallel Worlds." It's definitely very well done, but again it falls into the "frustratingly ultra-hard" category I mentioned above. I mean you go through the entire first dungeon without a sword!

Mega Mix is on Sega CD, you can just burn a copy of that and play it no problem.

NES versions of Mega Man 9 and 10 wouldn't be accurate to the official console versions. Despite appearances, those games actually do a bunch of stuff that isn't actually possible on NES hardware.

There's lot's of great quality hacks out there. Unfortunately, the sad truth is there's probably only 1 great hack for every 100 hacks. But there's lots of hacks worth checking out.

Tetris Zero is a new hack that looks interesting. It's a hack of Tetris for the NES. It adds a 2-player mode, which a lot of people wish Nintendo included like the Gameboy port or Tengen Tetris. I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but it looks great from the screenshots. The description makes says it includes a save file for the NES PowerPak, so I'm assuming that means it works good on real hardware.

Oh No! More Zombies Ate My Neighbors is another great ROM hack. I still haven't had the chance to play it more, but I played the first dozen or so levels and it seems solid.

RHDN (romhacking.net) is a great place to not only download translation/hack patches, but it's also a great place to "window shop" if you will.

I keep an eye on the home page, and check it when ever new hacks or utilities are added to the site. That way, I never miss anything cool. And since I've been checking, I've seen a lot of cool hacks.

Here's how I usually window shop: On the left menu, click on Hacks (or translations). Then at the top, sort the platform you want and click go. In the results, you can read the original game titles two columns in from the left. So if you sort Genesis, you can see that's there's lots of Sonic hacks. A few of them look good too. Like Knuckles in Sonic 1, Tails in Sonic 1, or spindash in Sonic 1.

I just read about this one, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 XL, and it's pretty funny.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 XL is a joke hack which adds a new gameplay gimmick. The standard rings the player normally collect have been replaced by onion rings. The more onion rings the player collects the fatter he gets. As he gets fatter he gets slower, jumps shorter, and becomes unable to roll. If the player eats too many onion rings the player will die. The player can burn off the fat by running or by breaking the ? monitors found throught the levels.

==Facts about the hack==

It takes about 5 rings to to go up a level in fatness.
Spindashing and normal spinning is lost at fat level 5.
It takes about 30 rings to die of fatness.
The fatter the player gets the less the player is able to look up and down, and gives up at level 6.
If using debug mode to finish Death Egg Zone as while fat the player goes down to fat level 3.
If breaking a “?” box, Sonic will lose weight instantly.

I was thinking about mentioning Sonic 2 XL. It's pretty funny, and actually adds a surprisingly cool new dynamic to the game. You gotta make sure you get rings so you stay alive, but not TOO many rings!
