R.O.B. Robot Repair?

Post by ReddMcKnight »

I just got a R.O.B. Robot for my NES. The problem? He won't turn left or right. He moves up and down okay, but he just will not turn left or right. Does anyone know how/if this can be fixed?

Probably need to open it up and see if the motor or gears for that direction are kaput or popped off a guide or something.

Does ROB make noise as if attempting to spin?

I modded mine, made a Guide. You can see a breakdown of the gears inside with fix for raising the arms. I think the gears for spinning ROB around is in the lower housing.

They are, but here's what's weird: When I use my finger to move one gear, the others don't move, but I can tell they're all there. Any idea what that's about?

EDIT: Yes, it makes a noise.

Pics of the lower housing? Maybe the shaft slipping or a gear tooth chewed up? If the shaft in the base is like the arm housing it might need similar epoxy fix.

Scrutinize the shaft, I suspect the one on the right with the spring clip might be slipping. As in the arms they are designed to slip if something is binding. However, over the years the shaft gets looser.

Not to sound like an idiot, but what is the "shaft" and how do I "scrutinize" it?

The metal bar supporting the plastic gears. Look at my repair on the arm to get an idea.

You can pop batteries in and run a couple of jumper wires, temporarily touching the terminals of the motor in the pic. Stay away from the PCB, you might fry it. Temporally make contact with the motor and observe the gears. You can figure out how everything is supposed to turn by running the motor. My guess is that silver hub on the right with the spring clip is slipping.

Be absolutely sure if you do the glue method. See if the slip is really bad or if something else inside might be causing the binding. Take out the entire gear assembly, see if ROB can be twisted bay hand. While the gear assembly is out you can see how the spring clip acts as a clutch, it should not be loose. The easy fix is a liquid nails with a toothpick.

After performing the Glue Trick, I got it working perfectly! Thank you so much for all your help! :D I truly appreciate it!
