Mixtape Thread

by J T Sun Mar 17, 2013 11:32 pm

I always loved making mixtapes. I make it an unnecessarily complicated process of sifting through tons of tracks, planning out an arc to the mix, and listening to the beginnings and ends of songs to make sure that each one flows well into the next without feeling too jarring. Occassionally I even make sure the lyrics all fit in some overall storyline. I take it all too seriously, but have fun doing so. I've always liked to introduce people to new music, and I still have people tell me that they listen to mixes that I made over 10 years ago. That's fun for me.

Well, time has gone by and the mixtape has been replaced by the YouTube playlist, so I'm starting this thread for us to share "mixtapes" in the form of playlists. To start off, here are two mixes I made of vocaloid music (songs sung by synthesized voice programs). Each mix is about an hour because I meant for this to be a double CD mix.

Enjoy, and post some mixtapes of your own if you've got something to share. :)

Lots of Project Diva songs on those Vocaloid lists. Hardly a bad thing.

True, but it's also pretty much coincidence. I haven't played the Project Diva games so I didn't know they were in the game when I picked them originally, but those tracks stood out to me anyway.

This is a chiptrunes mix that I made awhile ago. I tried to recreate it on YouTube, but I couldn't find a few of the songs I wanted, so I substituted in other songs by the artists.

Nevermind the Techno Dread… Here Comes the Happiness Machines!
Image

1. Big Giant Circles- “Katana Blaster (Mick Gordon’s Constantly Playing Mix)
2. Anamanaguchi- “Blackout City”
3. AWESOMECAT- “パーティーで最もきれいな女の子”
4. Chipzel- “Can’t Stop Us”
5. FantomenK- “Follow Me”
6. Ben Landis- “Breakthrough”
7. Br1ght Pr1mate- “Sexy & I Know It”
8. FantomenK- “Taking a Nap in the Jungle”
9. Crashfaster- “The Out” (missing on YouTube)
10. Anamanaguchi- “Aurora”
11. Module- “Kinetic Harvest”
12. Random- “Rus”
(I couldn't find "Rus" on youtube, so I used the similar sounding "Sitges Savepoint" instead)
13. Starpilot- “Sparkling”
14. Anamanaguchi- “Airbrushed”
15. FantomenK- “Getting Melodies Out of My Head”
16. Protodome- “Four Color Hero”
(I couldn't find "Four Color Hero" on YouTube, so I used "Hello World" instead)

Nice! I used to make mixtapes all the time - one reason was because my car didn't have a CD player.

I would download MP3s, burn them to a CD-R, and then use a boombox to record that music to a tape. Kinda awkward.

Anyway, I'll create one of these YouTube mixes once I figure out exactly how...

Robot Soul [Vocaloids 3]
I just finished this mix. This is the 3rd disc of my Robot Soul compilation mixes. I think this one is my favorite of the three. A few of the songs were missing from YouTube, so I replaced them with other tracks by the same artists.

Boo to the lack of actual tape in this thread. Here's one I made from college radio, some stuff I owned, and a few borrowed way back then. It was a nice angry, loud, and fast one for vehicle use.
