gosh i hope double posting this is fine here:
i checked out all of those games on youtube and I think the closest one might be Legendary Axe II... mostly because of the way the fighter looks, the levels and even that first boss is sort of golem like... though I remember the game looking quite lot differently lol...
again, could just be me

That is a SuperGrafx game too. So at this point I am totally willing to say the search is over mainly because my memory is corrupted. Thank you all again! I have discovered so many "new" games thanks to this thread!
