Thanks for the link, I didn't even know half those games existed! Anyways, I just picked up a modified Megadrive complete with a modified MegaCD and managed to get a few of those shooters for next to nothing on ebay (namely; Air Buster, Arrow Flash, Bio-Hazard Battle, Insector-X and Hellfire) - also got Android Assault and Gaiares, but they were more expensive.

Ardroid Assault is worth the extra money! The soundtrack has the best cheesy heavy metal. I also would highly recomend Robo Aleste. Even though the article had a few complaints when compared to MUSHA, I think it's the best shmup on the Sega CD.

Well, here's an update. Bestbuy.com dropped the price on the white PS2 Slimline to match the price of the black and silver models. ($130). The White one comes bundled with some singstar crap that I don't care about, but getting a white PS2 will be very cool. (Plus, it will match my current gaming setup that includes a 26 inch Samsung LCD HDTV (White), Xbox 360 Pro (White), along with my Nintendo Wii and Sega Dreamcast, which are also both white.) That will just look badass in that setup.

Play-Asia had my order updated to "Processing" status, which means they are packaging my order and getting it ready, and that my payment cleared. So the five import games I ordered should ship out in the next 48 hours I expect.

The site I ordered my Swap Magic discs from sent me an email stating that they had shipped. Won't be long now until I have some awesome new games to play. I can't wait.

Some searching on ebay produced some interesting finds for future purchases. Quite a few of the Dreamcast shooters I always wanted, but could not afford, were actually ported to PS2, and go for halfway decent prices on a regular basis. I think I will begin expanding my SHMUP collection with PS2 and get my hands on everything that I can. I even learned of some shooters I was not aware of, and will pursue when funding allows.

Once I get everything, and get setup, I'll post some pictures in this topic to let you all know how things are working out for me. Thanks for all the info and advice thus far!

I was considering getting my ps2 modded or using swap magic because there are soo many great Japan only Ps2 releases. Why the heck didn't they bring any Cave games to the US market?

Let me know how it works out for you.

I received my discs, tool kit and import games today. I had plans with friends this evening and did not have time to set things up. I plan to do so tomorrow evening after work. I will return here with my results at that time. In other good news, I won two ebay auctions for shmups. I got Gradius and Life Force for NES for $12 shipped. I also won a combined auction of Raiden Project and Philosoma complete with cases and manuals for PS1 for $52 shipped! That was a great price for that pair, yes? I will also share my thoughts on those titles when they arrive. Looking forward to testing my import games and sharing my impressions with you all.

Thats a good deal, I've seen Raiden alone go for that much. I totally forgot about Philosoma....i need to pick that up.
I just got Lords of Thunder for sega cd. I really like it so far. I got all the way to the last bost on my first sit down, but had to leave so i didn't beat it...yet. My one complaint is that the sound effects are too loud and you can't turn them down.

I got my new PS2 setup to play imports now, and I must say it is very cool. That Do Don Pachi game for PS2 rocks solid. Thanks for the recomendation Bootaaay. I can see now why that game is on so many top ten lists of favorite SHMUPS. I will post some pictures here soon of my SHMUP collection. I also won an ebay auction for a sealed copy of Darius Gaiden for the Saturn (US Version) for $26 shipped on ebay. My collection is really starting to grow with some awesome titles. I will try Espgaluda soon and post my thoughts here after I try it.

Yes, the disc works without a hitch. You have to install a parts kit, which is just a bunch of pre-made pieces that cover various sensors to make the system think the lid is closed when it is open. Dependant on the Slimline PS2 you have, you might have to open it up to install one piece, but believe me, it was a piece of cake. It was a little black plastic square that fit overtop the sensor trigger and kept it depressed at all times. Nothing difficult, no mod-chips, nothing that can't be easily followed with the set of online instructions. I did have trouble with the one that holds the disc brake back, but I just got a small piece of rubber and wedged in there to hold it back.

If you did the swap trick on the original PS1 years ago that involved a boot disc and a spring piece, this is basically the same concept. Just three pieces instead of one spring. A whole new library of PS2 gems is open to me now. When I have more money, I am going to collect more PS2 SHMUPS and more Sega Ages collection discs.
