Thought I posted this already:

788,700 - mjmjr25 - Stage 3 - shmupMAME

Game is pretty decent but i'm tired of wrestling MAME and the constant troubleshooting. This will be my final score :|

Don't really see the issue with MAME. I've even got Air Gallet running on my PSP. It runs pretty well, though not quite full speed, and you can switch the screen to TATE as well, although the PSP's controls aren't exactly ideal for TATE-ed games...

The issue is I don't know what i'm doing wrong and would rather game than troubleshoot.

I know some guys have zero issues and that's fantastic, but I also know many of us have constant issues.

First one (MAME32) ran incredibly slow in Windows 8 and no sound.
Second one (forget what it was called) said I needed to download something to extract the files, then that new program needed me to download something else. Never did get it working.
Third one (shmupmame 4.0) ran decent and had sound, and didn't require additional downloads, but had tons of hiccupping and would randomly rotate the screen mid-run and wouldn't go back until I logged out of the program and reset it under monitor controls. Then, it wouldn't allow me to close the window, no matter what I did, even closing the program in task manager. Had to hard reset my PC each time I was done.

None of the 3 took my 360 stick natively or with inputting controls, so had to use joytokey and get that setup and running for each run.

My brand new $800 PC (monitor not included) now has a bunch of crap to delete and I caught a virus along the way, despite the pre-installed and running Kapersky software.

Windows 8 might be part of some of the problems, but i've had very similar experiences w/7 and XP.

So, that's the "issue" w/MAME. F MAME.

Hmm...not sure what the solution for that is. As you say, it could be a W8 thing. I've used MAME on XP and W7 on laptops without too many problems. Haven't had an issue with any controllers either. I think I've only had to use joy2key or XPadder for certain doujin games, MAME has always recognised whatever pad I've been using.

I had one all lined up for SotM and guy flaked on me (think he got offered more than he was asking on shmups).

Seems to be doing $450+ - not sure it's worth it tbh.

Mid month progress -- I've been playing, but I've been playing the new games I just got as well as a ton of Wing Commander on TR.

ExedExes - 1,805,590 - Stage 4 - MAME

I no missed stages 1 & 2 here. Stage 4 is absolutely BRUTAL. This took me a few tries to get, and I think I've pretty much reached my max. I would also like to note the neat graphical touches like the stage 1 space shuttle and the stage 2 capital building blowing up (the same one from Taito's Tokio!)

I am also sorry to hear about your MAME troubles mjmr. Might I suggest an earlier version? I use 0.141 which I got from this site that collects the previous stable versions of MAMEUI32. 0.141 was the last update before they added the pinball/mechanical games that caused the main program core to expand rapidly, resulting in a longer load time upon startup. It got so bad that they only do a 64-bit MAMEUI nowadays, completely bypassing the 32-bit version.

Stage 4 boss again. I thought I was just under EE's score, but when I checked the thread again it turned out I'd beaten it by a few thousand. That's probably my last score for this, you've got another couple of weeks to beat that. :)
