Good Shmups for the SNES

by Soldier Blue Fri Aug 12, 2011 2:31 pm

What are some good shmups for the system? The only ones I have so far are Starfox and Darius Twin.

I think that about covers it. IMO Axelay is the best.

not to bash or anything, but from my experience shmups on the genesis are way more superior and slows down less than their snes counterparts.

I came to realize the snes is more of an rpgs/platformer kinda console, while the genesis done better with shmups and arcadie kinda games.

There's also Super Aleste, UN Squadron, Aerofighters, and Super R Type. And while it doesn't have them ranked or anything, you can use this list if you're looking for completion: http://www.shmups.com/xenocidefiles/snes.html

R-Type 3 is definitely at the top of my list. It's also very worth it to import Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie, Pop'n Twinbee, and the Parodius games.

UN Squadron is fantastic, but get a PC Engine or Turbografx. You will have a lot more fun down the line.

Strike Gunner STG!

I used to love that game back in the day! Pretty sure that's the one where players 1 and 2 can join their ships together to become super badass.

Thunder Spirits is a weird port of Thunder Force III from the Genesis, it has different levels here and there and a very different soundtrack (obviously), lacks auto-fire sadly but it's still worth checking out.

I recommend just about everything else mentioned as well. UN Squadron is newer to me and it's definitely pretty cool, brutal too. Haha.
