Panic Playdate

by Golgo 14 Thu Jul 29, 2021 4:55 pm

Welp, I ordered one. I'm fairly certain I'm in the first 20,000 orders, so I should get one later this year. Follow along to see what I think of it when it gets here. Any other Playdate owners-to-be here?

Hey, but seriously, I got my Playdate in the mail today. It's charging now, but I'll try to update this thread with my thoughts as time goes on.

What exactly is it?
I'm parting with some duplicate Blu-Ray and DVD movies. Check out this thread if interested.

This is a good question. It's a hipstery little portable gaming device made by Panic that just shipped. It features a small b&w screen and a crank on the side that is utilized as a controller in some of the games. It comes with 24 games which are downloaded onto the device 2 at a time over 12 weeks.

My initial impression is to agree with a lot of the reviews that the screen visibility is an issue. It's not backlit for some reason, so if you're inside, it looks like dogshit unless you're directly underneath a lamp. If you're outside and the sun is shining, it looks pretty great. I have a feeling I'll mostly be using it on a bench in my front yard.

I've been looking forward to the Playdate for months, but tbh I'm pretty depressed right now and that's not conducive to enjoying such a whimsical device.

This makes sense now. When I first read the title, I thought you had bought it in a panic...

Resurrecting this thread to say that I also finally got my playdate. I'm in week 3 of the season. 2 games a week.

I'm having an absolute blast with it. Some real creative games in there. I'm going to wait until the end of the season to post kind of a round up of the Playdate, but I'm pretty stoked on it.
