Old GameCube PAR's can get expensive (if found) -- would it be cheaper to buy a GC mod?
(Or, technically, another mod that lets you use DVD+/-R's and a USB memory card with a DOL file loaded to it...)

SNK published this Neo Geo game in 1996. It has some sprite and background artwork so good that they have survived even into Metal Slug 6. This is one fast, bloody (if played in Japan) game in the school of the NES version of Contra, and Irem's Gunforce series. You go through six missions of ass kicking, shooting/rolling over/immolating your way to victory. The game's controls, level design, graphics and sound merge together flawlessly for one of the best gaming experiences around.
If you want to get technical, the full name of the game is Metal Slug: Super Tank 001. This is in reference to the completely awesome tank you can get into and roll around in. It lets you run over soldiers, over cars, over just about anything since its treads are made out of some kind of future rubber. The way you can catch the edge of a platform and still roll up onto it is awesome.

They all look about the same to me, and none of them feel better/worse in any noticeable way. There IS some input lag, but the fact that it is the same in each makes me think that perhaps this is designed lag also present in the MVS/AES? Is there something I am missing?

Apologies for the somewhat shaky cam/one handed playing
I think the lag on the PAL Anthology is much, much worse from all I've read whereas on the NTSC it isn't so bad. I don't doubt the compilation's games aren't 100% perfect (few ever are), but I am doubtful that the difference is as bad/problematic as some make it out to be.

I have every official MVS release and have played all the Metal Slugs on my CMVS and on my MVS and there is absolutely zero input lag in any metal slug game on official hardware.

Slowdown yes. Input lag, no. Like I say, it's hard to see the input lag on the ps2, you feel it more than you see it. Notice however on the MVS that you can see the response at the exact same moment that you hear the click of the microswitch. As soon as the button is pressed, the action is performed. There is zero input lag on MVS. On the PS2, notice that the button is released before the action is performed.

This game makes Metal Slug 2 obsolete - it's essentially the same game, but remixed, like a Director's Cut. Although the levels are the same, many of the stage graphics have changed so you're fighting through areas at different times of day - you fight in the first stage under the cover of night, instead of during the bright sunlight of day, for example. The music is basically identical, although some themes have been slightly remixed and enhanced. There are more enemies and weapons in general, making for a much more havoc filled experience. The first stage boss has been changed to a midboss later in the game, and has been replaced by one of the bosses from the original Metal Slug. There are plenty of new enemies, including mummy dogs in the pyramid levels, and new weapons, like the awesome Iron Lizard, which sends exploding mechanical devices flying along the floor.

Metal Slug 4 has a substantial amount of recycled graphics, both in-game and as leftovers in the graphic tiles, with stuff even from the first game. Heck, it even recycles stuff from a King of Fighters game! Whatever Metal Slug 4 didn't recycle, it frankenstein'd. The sad truth.

This is the first Metal Slug made by SNK since Metal Slug 3. It shows. It's also the first (and only) entry to run on the Atomiswave platform, leaving the old Neo Geo hardware behind - which, when this was released in 2006, was over fifteen years old.
A first for this Metal Slug game is that the different playable characters have different attributes - Marco has a stronger pistol, Tarma is an expert at vehicular combat, Fio starts with a Heavy Machine Gun every time she dies, and Eri has double the amount of grenades, in addition the ability to toss them in every direction. And ever since the rebirth of SNK, the company has been very eager to please its fans (see: the entirety of King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 / 2006) - Ralf Steel and Clark Jones, also known as the Ikari Warriors, have been added as playable characters, bringing the total roster to six.

Sadly, Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii does not support use of the Classic Controller for gameplay. The reason behind it is that according to Ben Herman, in the beginning, “Nintendo initially intended for that controller to be used primarily for the Virtual Console only.” Thus Terminal Reality did not receive instruction on how to implement the Classic Control configuration in the game.
Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote:http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/metalslug/metalslug4.htm
Alternatively, you can use a Gamecube controller, but the digital pad doesn't work, restricting you to the analog stick. This does not work at all with a 2D game like this, and results in the games feeling very slippery. It also eliminates the use of most joysticks and the SNES-style Hori pad.
You can't use the Classic Controller at all, apparently due to Nintendo not furnishing the necessary software libraries in time for release. These all seem like really strange and bizarre oversights. The Japanese version, dubbed Metal Slug Complete, was released a few months later and adds in proper Classic Controller support, but a fat lot of good that does for everyone else.
CRTGAMER wrote:If there were one game that really emphasizes getting an older vertical Wii, it would be Metal Slug. This is due to its uniqueness in Gamecube Controller support, but No Classic Controller option

Wii Network Service Partial Discontinuation
We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products. We would like to inform you that a portion of the network services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued starting June 27, 2013.

My Wii's home menu looks more sad now. Most of the affected channels just give the message that the service has been shut down, but the Everybody Votes Channel still lets you view the most recent results and your voting profiles. I think I'll miss the globe from the News Channel the most.
CRTGAMER wrote:WII CHANNEL STATUS LIST - Verified 06/28/2013

This could have been continued, marketing push to upgrade to the WiiU?
News Channel - DISCONTINUED
A very good channel, the News Globe was fun to look thru. As in the Weather, this could have been easily continued. Marketing move to purchase the WiiU?
Wii Speak Software - WORKS BE WARY
Even though online sharing is canceled, the downloaded file still runs. This might be an issue later for future purchasers of the Wii Speak since it requires an "Online Authentication" download file. A used Wii Speak hardware normally will not work on a second console without somehow convincing Nintendo to receive the authentication software.
Hardware System Update - WORKS
Though there is no plans for any more BIOS updates, this is currently still supported.
Wii Shop Channel - WORKS
So far one can still buy downloads. More significant is getting the free utilities such as Opera, Netflix, Hulu and Youtube. This support could eventually go away, so download while you still can.
Opera Internet Browsing - WORKS
Even though browsing via a console is a little more cumbersome then a computer, a nice option.
YouTube - NetFlix - Hulu - WORKS
As in Opera once the file is downloaded, these do not seem to need Nintendo Online Services to access.
Everybody Votes Channel - PARTIAL WORKING
Out of the list of discontinued channels announced, this is the only "discontinued" channel that appears to be still working. It will not accept any new votes, but the screen appears active with clickable sections just to view previous posted status.
Nintendo Channel - DISCONTINUED ERROR 262102
This was a strange move by Nintendo that may have lost part of their advertising market. Even though no new Wii games will be posted, it was a great Shopping Guide. Wii Owners could have continued to use it to decide on purchases of 3DS titles or even be swayed to upgrade to the WiiU due to the advertising of the WiiU game titles.
Check Mii Out Channel - DISCONTINUED ERROR 252102
Mii Channel - WORKS
Except for online sharing of Miis, everything else is intact.
Photo Channel - WORKS
Except for online sharing, everything else works.
Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus - WORKS
Your exercise routines can still be updated.

Wii Connect24 Game Saves - Still Locked From Backup
Would be nice if the Wii Connect24 game saves will become unlocked for backup to SD Card. So far they are still locked, I suspect will remain so even though Wii online gaming has gone away.
