Old GameCube PAR's can get expensive (if found) -- would it be cheaper to buy a GC mod?
(Or, technically, another mod that lets you use DVD+/-R's and a USB memory card with a DOL file loaded to it...)

This could be another option, but I don't think it would work for the PAL conversion mentioned on the previous page. I rather use original discs anyways since the investment of a mod chip, full size top or more expensive mini DVDRs not worth it to me.

Of note the memory card would not be USB but a regular SD Card with a Gecko adapter. The Gamecube memory card is basically a derivative of the SD card.

Right, I remember that. I still forget why certain SD-to-GC adapters are read-only (you can read saves from the SDcard), while others adapters have users that claim read-and-write.

Wii Metal Slug Anthology
Arcade Perfect with undocumented control option

This game started out on the Neo Geo Arcade cabinet and home console over ten years ago in 1996. Many reincarnations followed on newer consoles, portables and phones. The run and gun 2d platformer has beautiful prerendered backgrounds, interactive vehicles to jump in and huge sprite boss enemies. The Metal Slug name denotes one of the interactive vehicles, a miniature Tank that almost has a robotic capability of jumping and crouching.

Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote:http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/metalslug/metalslug.htm

SNK published this Neo Geo game in 1996. It has some sprite and background artwork so good that they have survived even into Metal Slug 6. This is one fast, bloody (if played in Japan) game in the school of the NES version of Contra, and Irem's Gunforce series. You go through six missions of ass kicking, shooting/rolling over/immolating your way to victory. The game's controls, level design, graphics and sound merge together flawlessly for one of the best gaming experiences around.

If you want to get technical, the full name of the game is Metal Slug: Super Tank 001. This is in reference to the completely awesome tank you can get into and roll around in. It lets you run over soldiers, over cars, over just about anything since its treads are made out of some kind of future rubber. The way you can catch the edge of a platform and still roll up onto it is awesome.

Lag Issue?
I have PS1, PS2 4/5/Anthology/3D, GBA, and Wii versions of Metal Slug and enjoy them all. Well, the PS2 3D version maybe not as much. The claims of slowdown are hardly noticeable at least on all the NTSC versions I have played. All play just fine and work beautiful coupled with an Arcade Stick. I'm not saying Arcade video perfect, but the consoles offer pretty good emulation as well as recoded ports.

dsheinem wrote:Ok, so for shits and giggles I recorded video of Metal Slug and Metal Slug X on the PSP, PS2, and MAME to see what lag there is to be found. They all look about the same to me, and none of them feel better/worse in any noticeable way. There IS some input lag, but the fact that it is the same in each makes me think that perhaps this is designed lag also present in the MVS/AES? Is there something I am missing?

Apologies for the somewhat shaky cam/one handed playing

I think the lag on the PAL Anthology is much, much worse from all I've read whereas on the NTSC it isn't so bad. I don't doubt the compilation's games aren't 100% perfect (few ever are), but I am doubtful that the difference is as bad/problematic as some make it out to be.
o.pwuaioc wrote:I've only played Metal Slug 3 on an MVS, and I do recall some slowdown.

Let's be clear, I'm referring to input lag, not slowdown. Maybe the arcade you were playing was a bootleg. There are lots of boots out there that act out of whack.

I have every official MVS release and have played all the Metal Slugs on my CMVS and on my MVS and there is absolutely zero input lag in any metal slug game on official hardware.

http://youtu.be/V-SuVPyKG90

Slowdown yes. Input lag, no. Like I say, it's hard to see the input lag on the ps2, you feel it more than you see it. Notice however on the MVS that you can see the response at the exact same moment that you hear the click of the microswitch. As soon as the button is pressed, the action is performed. There is zero input lag on MVS. On the PS2, notice that the button is released before the action is performed.

Graphics and Sounds
The emulation on the Wii version is very well done with no frame skip or stutter issues. Purists prefer Raster Scan lines of the Arcade, but I have found the component 480p hookup on a HDCRT look just beautiful with no scaling issues. Sounds as well are all here with plenty of weapons fire blasts, booming explosions and shrill voice yells. When a prisoner is rescued, the "Thankyou" voice is clearly heard. :D

Of note, the Anthology does not contain the "Combat School" mode. This was a feature in the Neo Geo and older consoles that allowed replaying levels a different way such as time limit or never getting killed thru a level.

Metal Slug
Shoot or throw grenades to kill enemies. If right next to an enemy a knife is used in a melee attack. Free a prisoner results in gaining points or a new weapon. The first Metal Slug has traditional war themed levels. Later editions would expand to new worlds and enemies.

Image

Metal Slug 2
A level in this game features mummies which can temporarily change your character into a mummy. You still maintain control of your character, though moving more slowly wrapped in bandages. Instead of throwing grenades, toss a bone from your back rib cage.

Image

Metal Slug X
Coded as a revised and improved version of Metal Slug 2.

Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote:http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/metalslug/metalsluga.htm

This game makes Metal Slug 2 obsolete - it's essentially the same game, but remixed, like a Director's Cut. Although the levels are the same, many of the stage graphics have changed so you're fighting through areas at different times of day - you fight in the first stage under the cover of night, instead of during the bright sunlight of day, for example. The music is basically identical, although some themes have been slightly remixed and enhanced. There are more enemies and weapons in general, making for a much more havoc filled experience. The first stage boss has been changed to a midboss later in the game, and has been replaced by one of the bosses from the original Metal Slug. There are plenty of new enemies, including mummy dogs in the pyramid levels, and new weapons, like the awesome Iron Lizard, which sends exploding mechanical devices flying along the floor.

Image Image

Metal Slug 3
A lot of variety in this version, the game starts out fighting large crabs. Some of the "Metal Slug" vehicles include a Jet, Submarine and even a fully gun loaded camel to hop in. A later level features Zombies. Just like the mummies in Metal Slug 2 you can be temporarily transformed, this time controlling a zombie. Instead of a grenade, shoot a stream of killing blood across the entire screen!

Image

Metal Slug 4
Yet more Metal Slug, nothing really different compared to the early games.

Image

Random Hoo Haas wrote:http://www.randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com/msmia/4/ug.html

Metal Slug 4 has a substantial amount of recycled graphics, both in-game and as leftovers in the graphic tiles, with stuff even from the first game. Heck, it even recycles stuff from a King of Fighters game! Whatever Metal Slug 4 didn't recycle, it frankenstein'd. The sad truth.

Image

Metal Slug 5
Your character can now do a new move. Hated by some gamers, a slide move to quickly get out of the way of enemy fire. Sometimes the slide move causes your character to fall off a boat or cliff. On the plus, an interesting spider like vehicle can be driven in a later level.

Image

Metal Slug 6
Metal Slug 6 was released only in Japan. However, it also can be found as part of the Anthology series on the PSP as well as the PS2 and Wii consoles. This alone makes the Anthology set worth getting.

I noticed the graphics have been for lack of a better description; smoothed up in this version compared to earlier releases. You also gain two more characters for a total of six to choose from. Still good old Metal Slug gameplay, as in one thru five. Noteworthy is the giant boss serpent in one of the levels, reminds me of the dragon in the Arcade Syvalion.

Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote:http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/metalslug/metalslug2.htm

This is the first Metal Slug made by SNK since Metal Slug 3. It shows. It's also the first (and only) entry to run on the Atomiswave platform, leaving the old Neo Geo hardware behind - which, when this was released in 2006, was over fifteen years old.

A first for this Metal Slug game is that the different playable characters have different attributes - Marco has a stronger pistol, Tarma is an expert at vehicular combat, Fio starts with a Heavy Machine Gun every time she dies, and Eri has double the amount of grenades, in addition the ability to toss them in every direction. And ever since the rebirth of SNK, the company has been very eager to please its fans (see: the entirety of King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 / 2006) - Ralf Steel and Clark Jones, also known as the Ikari Warriors, have been added as playable characters, bringing the total roster to six.

This section drove me nuts! At first I thought collecting coins scattered in the game counted towards the tokens needed to purchase the unlocks. After reviewing the game manual, a game must be played all the way thru. Depending on difficulty level selected, a given set of tokens are awarded at the completion of the game. I beat a couple of games and still did not gain any tokens! The game defaults as unlimited continues which in turn kills unlocking the extras! Be sure to go into the options and turn off unlimited continues to gain the tokens.

Control Options
Wii Metal Slug has a wide variety of control options, some of which are strange for a traditional stick and button controlled game. A few firsts for the Wii that I have not seen in other games.

Nunchuck
Movement is controlled by the Nunchuck stick. C button for jump and Z button for fire. Workable though awkward as a one handed controlled game. Flick the Nunchuck to throw a gernade, this is ridiculous.

Wiimote Sensor Mode
Tilt the Wiimote to move your character left and right. It works though not accurately, especially when a quick reverse direction response is needed.

Wiimote Sideways Mode
This approaches closer but not quite there to the Arcade. The Dpad is for sideways movement, the 1 button for shoot and the 2 button for jump. The disappointment is that a shake of the Wiimote is requred to throw a gernade! Really? SNK should have made the A or B button for the grenade throw. Most of the time I avoid the shake gernade throw since it is so distracting from controlling movement at the same time. I also have modded a NES controller to a Wiimote and play the game that way as well without throwing a grenade. I hate having to jump up in order to shoot downwards, a grenade would have been easier to dispatch enemies below.

Right Or Left Handed Option
One thing that is unique with the Sideways Control option is the Wiimote can be set up for right handed or left handed control. In a very uncommon feature, the Wimote can be flipped around with the Dpad to the right and the 1 and 2 buttons to the left! Even my modded NES gamepad setup works, just flip it upside down for left handed player. Certainly feels different shooting with the left thumb and controlling movement with the right. More sideways control games should have this simple added option.

Arcade
This is a misleading control option, depending how you interpret it. Hold the Wiimote vertical and tilt is as if a virtual Arcade Stick. I actually had to pull down and right to shoot to the right correctly. Different, but not precise instant control.

Gamecube Controller
Saved the best for last, pure direct control. Unfortunately there is no Classic Controller support, but the game does a Gamecube controller capability. This allows a complete instant "mechanical" control without any of the silly shake to throw a grenade or tilt to move. The Gamecube controller is so much better then the Wiimote or Nunchuck arrangement. The only disappointment is the Dpad is not used for movement, only the analog stick.

Ferry Groenendijk wrote:http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2007/04/08/metal-slug-anthology-wii-review.htm

Sadly, Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii does not support use of the Classic Controller for gameplay. The reason behind it is that according to Ben Herman, in the beginning, “Nintendo initially intended for that controller to be used primarily for the Virtual Console only.” Thus Terminal Reality did not receive instruction on how to implement the Classic Control configuration in the game.
Hardcore Gaming 101 wrote:http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/metalslug/metalslug4.htm

Alternatively, you can use a Gamecube controller, but the digital pad doesn't work, restricting you to the analog stick. This does not work at all with a 2D game like this, and results in the games feeling very slippery. It also eliminates the use of most joysticks and the SNES-style Hori pad.

You can't use the Classic Controller at all, apparently due to Nintendo not furnishing the necessary software libraries in time for release. These all seem like really strange and bizarre oversights. The Japanese version, dubbed Metal Slug Complete, was released a few months later and adds in proper Classic Controller support, but a fat lot of good that does for everyone else.

No Classic Control kills using the more traditional approach with a stick and buttons. The specialized Classic Controller Tatsunko Capcom Arcade Stick would have been so perfect for this game. However, a Gamecube PSX Controller adapter allows a wide range of PSX controllers and more importantly, PSX Arcade Sticks! Even though the game does not support the Dpad which most Arcade sticks emulate, some adapters such as the Mayflash allow the Arcade stick to emulate the analog stick. I found this the best method for Arcade control perfection using a Blaze Twinshock.

CRTGAMER wrote:If there were one game that really emphasizes getting an older vertical Wii, it would be Metal Slug. This is due to its uniqueness in Gamecube Controller support, but No Classic Controller option

Most console Arcade sticks have a Rapid or Auto Fire option built into the controller. Of note, the Metal Slug Anthology offers Rapid Fire capability right in the game so any of the controllers can exploit this. Okay it is not in the Arcade, but really adds a "Gunstar Heros" satisfaction in shooting which really enhances the game. :!:

Conclusion
Some prefer the individual releases due to reputation of being the best versions as being ported. I found the Wii Anthology a nice rounded package with some nice features.

1. Seven Metal Slug games in one package, no need to change discs.
2. So many control options though some are terrible, definitely unique.
3. Rapid Fire "Gunstar" capability, a nice extra that is not available in the Arcade.
4. Unlimited continue option, another nice extra not available on all ports.
5. The emulation is very well done, from what I see no apparent slowdown.
6. Except for Neo Geo carts, fast load times in comparison to older consoles.
7. Undocumented Arcade Stick option, this really ups the score on the game play.
8. The extras in the disc including History, Artwork, Screenshots and Trivia of the series.

The individual releases on the other consoles have their own advantages such as the Neo Geo exact Arcade ports and other consoles having decent ports and exclusive extras. The biggest disappointment is exclusion of the "Combat School" option which allowed a playthru of a level in a new way. That said, the Wii version holds its own as a nice collection of six Metal Slug games with very good emulation. Try playing the Anthology the best way; the undocumented Gamecube PSX controller adapter option for playing the series with an Arcade stick.

Wii and Gamecube Guide - Reviews Mods - Channel Status List

Wii Network Service Partial Discontinuation

We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company’s products. We would like to inform you that a portion of the network services offered through the Wii console will be discontinued starting June 27, 2013.

Duane Dibbley wrote:http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&p=741178#p741178

My Wii's home menu looks more sad now. Most of the affected channels just give the message that the service has been shut down, but the Everybody Votes Channel still lets you view the most recent results and your voting profiles. I think I'll miss the globe from the News Channel the most.

Thanks to Duane Dibbley's Thread, I have been keeping a close eye on the Nintendo Wii Network Services partial shutdown. Due to the significance, I made this Post in this Wii Thread for a continual update reference. The shutdown was expected, as in any new console coming to market, the older console eventually loses online support.

Clicking on a canceled Channel such as News or Weather Forecast first instantly pops up "Unable to obtain latest update". It also does not allow older information that was saved to the Wii previously to be read. After clicking Start on a Channel, the Wii will try to access and then recieves a message stating that the channel is discontinued with a "Thank you for your participation." :?:

A continual Update, I added below with what I have discovered so far.

CRTGAMER wrote:WII CHANNEL STATUS LIST - Verified 06/28/2013

Forecast Channel - DISCONTINUED
This could have been continued, marketing push to upgrade to the WiiU?

News Channel - DISCONTINUED
A very good channel, the News Globe was fun to look thru. As in the Weather, this could have been easily continued. Marketing move to purchase the WiiU?

Wii Speak Software - WORKS  BE WARY :!:
Even though online sharing is canceled, the downloaded file still runs. This might be an issue later for future purchasers of the Wii Speak since it requires an "Online Authentication" download file. A used Wii Speak hardware normally will not work on a second console without somehow convincing Nintendo to receive the authentication software.

Hardware System Update - WORKS
Though there is no plans for any more BIOS updates, this is currently still supported.

Wii Shop Channel - WORKS
So far one can still buy downloads. More significant is getting the free utilities such as Opera, Netflix, Hulu and Youtube. This support could eventually go away, so download while you still can.

Opera Internet Browsing - WORKS
Even though browsing via a console is a little more cumbersome then a computer, a nice option.

YouTube - NetFlix - Hulu - WORKS
As in Opera once the file is downloaded, these do not seem to need Nintendo Online Services to access.

Everybody Votes Channel - PARTIAL WORKING :?:
Out of the list of discontinued channels announced, this is the only "discontinued" channel that appears to be still working. It will not accept any new votes, but the screen appears active with clickable sections just to view previous posted status.

Nintendo Channel - DISCONTINUED ERROR 262102
This was a strange move by Nintendo that may have lost part of their advertising market. Even though no new Wii games will be posted, it was a great Shopping Guide. Wii Owners could have continued to use it to decide on purchases of 3DS titles or even be swayed to upgrade to the WiiU due to the advertising of the WiiU game titles.

Check Mii Out Channel - DISCONTINUED ERROR 252102

Mii Channel - WORKS
Except for online sharing of Miis, everything else is intact.

Photo Channel - WORKS
Except for online sharing, everything else works.

Wii Fit / Wii Fit Plus - WORKS
Your exercise routines can still be updated.

The hardware allows it, yet. I play import GC games on my Wii with a temporary hack that launches the Gecko tool. I'd suggest having a different memory card to use just for JP games.

Well I guess the channels is a good reason I never did online stuff on my wii....wanted to do the nintendo channel but didn't even know about it until it was too late. Would've been nice but ehh :-\ Sad part is mine has the gc feature but I probably don't make use of it like I should. I'm half tempted before I move out to somehow figure out how to make the switch so I can take it with me even if I do get a wii u. I will definitely be reading though some of the reviews more though(I need to watch more of the metaljesus vids too, amazing videos for finding some games I don't already have...)

I will definitely be reading though some of the reviews more though (I need to watch more of the metaljesus vids too, amazing videos for finding some games I don't already have...)

Good that you have the older Wii, there are Wii games that make good use of the Gamecube ports. Metal Jesus videos are the best, real enthusiasm in the reviews!

Yeah, his videos definitely make my wallet hurt but there's always a game or two that he mentions that I really want(and more than that, that I want but I'm not too concerned about...). He is the reason though that I picked up chibi robo park patrol on ds....that game is a little tough( I really need to put a better effort into that one in the morning) but it was fun. But I bet MetalJesus doesn't even make mention of spectrobes or epic mickey. Those two are underrated but great gems on the wii that i know I have in my collection. Not to mention if you don't have the tak games those are great too(those really itch my 3d action/adventure(I can't remember which it is) platformer itch I have right now). And now that i think about it Jett Rocket is great as well. Weird concept/backstory but it is good. I think the only thing besides maybe a exclusive nintendo first party or two, that I may be missing, that I might be missing a authentic japanese type game(like katamari's oddness level) for the wii. I really want to add some more odd titles to my collection.
