Have you already played all the classics?

Or the standard recommendations: Contra, Zelda, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, Chrono Trigger, Galaga, Megaman 2, Robotron, Doom and all the other first tier games. The games that pop up again and again and every gamer knows of.

The reason why I ask this is because my game wishlist includes very few games and ten years down the road I can see myself having played them all, and I have actually played most of the list already. I can see you guys, being older than me, having to focus on hidden gems or niche titles because you are already played or checked out the mainstream retrogaming titles.

What dou think?

I've played a lot of classics, but there are so many games out there. I play hidden gems and indie titles more out of curiosity or an interest in a different approach. I still have classics to get through. I was just telling emwearz the other day that I wasn't very interested in playing Avernum because I still haven't played a lot of the CRPG classics like Baldur's Gate.

Don't really care about this sort of thing. The same thing with books. I read a chunk of the classics and decided I wouldn't bother with that.

Contra - nope
Zelda- yep, except the handhelds
Super Metroid- nope
Super Castlevania IV- only played 5 seconds of it, never been a fan of Castlevania games
Chrono Trigger- I've played and beaten it but honestly thought it was kinda meh
Galaga- hell yes
Megaman 2- personal favorite is X2
Robotron- on the N64, sure
Doom- love it

I have to admit, that after attempting to acquire shit tons of games for a couple different systems (which I've discovered is totally not for me), I always go back to the ones I grew up with or have an attachment to because I had/played them when I first started to really like playing video games. I'm not what one would consider a "hardcore gamer" because it's not very often that I pick up a new game and actually finish it (at least not anymore). And the ones I have picked up are mostly Marios, Zeldas and Final Fantasys (mind you, the only ones I've REALLY played and finish were the original and Mystic Quest, which is even less hardcore). I don't really look for/play/collect "hidden gems" or "classics" or "rare" stuff because it's a hidden gem, classic or rare, I get games that I personally like and have an attachment to, because in the end, those are the games I know that I'll keep and be able to enjoy again. I'm probably missing out on a lot of great games this way, but I'll never know if I never know so it's ok.

I think that, with any form of media, the more you dig, the more must-experience classics you tend to find.

Exactly. I'm reading Ray Chandler books right now and they're "important classics." I'm just reading them because they're good. Same with games, or anything else. I never played Mega Man 2 because Mega Man X looked more interesting. I played the great classic Secret of Mana and thought it wasn't that great.

Galaga? That's classic for a reason. ;)

I've played many of them, but there's still plenty I haven't. There's simply more good games out there than most people have time to play.

I've only ever beaten two Zelda games.
