Note wrote:Lufia & the Fortress of Doom (SNES) - When I was young, I actually bought Lufia 2 on a whim, just because I thought the cover art looked good. That was one of the best games I ever picked out randomly! At that age, I had a bit of a tough time with some of the dungeon puzzles, but I enjoyed the graphics and gameplay and put a lot of hours into it. All these years later, I still had never played the first game in the series, so I'm really happy to finally have this one as well.

Knights of the Round (SNES) - This is another game I used to see advertisements for reading through gaming magazines in the 90's, but I never managed to come across it in an arcade or try it out at a friend's place. I finally ended up trying it through emulation and enjoyed what I had played. However, as a Capcom fan and beat 'em up fan, I was looking for a physical copy for quite a long time. This just seemed to be one of those games that avoided me, until I finally came across the cart this summer. I think my partner and I will have a blast playing this co-op. And for me, it'll be fun to compare it to the arcade version I played on the Switch a few months back and to compare it to King of Dragons on the SNES, which I also really enjoy.

Tetris Attack (SNES) - This is another game that was a curiosity for me, as I had not played this one back in the day or have any friends or relatives that owned it. However, I had not purchased any puzzle games in quite some time and had heard good things about this title. It was pretty cheap, so I figured I'd go for it. I really like the mechanics in this game and it's super colorful. The gameplay definitely hooked me, and when I went to test the cart, I found myself playing for an hour or so. I need to practice this to get through some of the later levels, but overall I'm glad to add a puzzle title to my stash of games, as I don't have too many.

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber (N64) - One of my collecting goals is to track down the few 2D sprite based games for the N64, and the few good RPGs that were released on the system. I had passed up on this title a few times in the past few years, but when I went in to a local game store to get a disc repaired and I saw it available, I decided to go for it. I played through the tutorial, which is quite extensive, to get a feel for the game. As I began playing, I found the menu system to be a bit overwhelming, but the next thing I knew, an hour had passed, and I managed to get through the tutorial. I can imagine this game being quite addictive, and am excited to give it a go. This series is new to me, so I'm glad to add a different strategy RPG to the mix.

Quality Pick Ups!!

But, you hit the nail on the head when it comes to Ogre Battle 64. The beginning is quite daunting and they throw a ton of information at you at once. However, once you understand the game and really get into it, the hours will just fly by. It consumed by life for an entire month when I played it earlier this year.

Shining Force: Sword of Hayja (GG)

...I'm way late with August additions, it was a light month though. No classic pickups this time around, hopefully I'll correct that next month. I was really looking forward to both of these releases though.

Awesome, glad to hear the series has your approval. The Bone Seal of Quality is important!

Thanks, Markies! Looking forward to giving it a go. It'll take some time for me to understand all the various systems and menus but I think I'll have a good time with it.

Great pick-ups prfsnl, Syndicate, and Elk!

I really want to try Shining Force: Sword of Hajya. Look forward to reading your thoughts on it, whenever that may be.

Syndicate, that's awesome you picked up the new Rocky & Pocky game. I'm curious about that one too, as the gameplay vids I've seen look really good. Enjoy it!

Bone, Rent-A-Hero looks like a really cool game too. Another unique one in the Sega catalogue. I just recently learned there was a Dreamcast remake and an Xbox remake that was almost finished but never released it.

Small collection milestone, but I finally managed to track down the remaining (physical) VNs I've been after.

Image

There were ten million Sailor Moon video games, and yup, one of them was a visual novel. Tokimeki Memorial is the classic Konami dating sim, and yes Koji Igarashi was the writer. Originally on the PCE CD, the Super Famicom game is a port. The Meitantei Conan (Case Closed) game is the second of three on the GBC; I've beaten the first one. The overall series is massive.

Image

Now, these are localized versions of Japanese visual novels, released by Hirameki International, in the early 2000s as part of their "Anime Play" series. They are not DVD-ROMs but actual DVDs: as in, they can be played on any DVD player or console with DVD compatibility. The games are cool but the format is.... not ideal. It makes for a somewhat clunky experience and passwords must be used in lieu of saving.
