2020 Gaming Goals and Resolutions
Re: 2020 Gaming Goals and Resolutions
I may add buying a wii u and collecting games for it and the wii to my list. IMy wii broke a long time ago and between the 2 systems there are more than enough exclusives that I either never played or really liked to warrant the purchase.
Wii has a great emulator that runs flawlessly but emulating motion controls is more trouble than its worth so it is not super practical outside of games that either dont use motion controls or have very minor motion controls (punch out and dk country returns spring to mind here). I also really miss light gun games and the wii mote was really good for those games.

Yea the wii u doesn't have the best selection but you can play wii games, and the shop has gba and ds games.
The wii actually has a great selection of underrated games. Endless Ocean: Blue World, Sin & Punishment, Red Steel 2, Muramasa, and A Boy and his Blob. I gotta try Dawn of Discovery.
They did have a decent selection of games on eshop but they shut down their servers. I guess you need a modded wii to play those which mine is.
Might as well ask now too. Any recommendations for exclusive wii eshop games?

Not sure but I think the eshop on Wii is gone. Only there if you already bought items on it previously.
My gaming resolutions are pretty simple, take part in more Together Retro's, get another PS2 and sell more stuff.

The Wii eShop is gone, sadly, and it took some cool exclusives with it. The Wii U eShop is still available, though, and it has some pretty great games on it, particularly VC titles. My Wii U is basically a HD N64 and TG16, and it is also a great way to upscale Wii games for modern televisions.

Yea I did look it up and archive.org has practically all the wiiware games now that they're no longer available legally. I did end up getting Jett Rocket as it's apparently quite good and is from 2010, so it'll suit the current together retro theme.
I'll do research today on what other wiiware games are considered essential.

I would like to introduce you to something called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Point made. I'm currently working a bit on Super Ghouls and Ghosts. So far, I can get to the bird boss bit, but that's usually where I die.

A few, that I can think of, that are probably worth scoping out are the Konami Rebirth games (Gradius, Contra, Castlevania), LostWinds and LostWinds 2 (although these are apparently available on iOS and Windows now), Zombie Panic in Wonderland, and Alien Crush Returns. I'm sure there are a few others, but I can't really think of them at the moment. I don't think there's all that much that's still stranded in WiiWare land, these days.
Edit: Star Soldier R is another good one. Oddly there was a remake of Phalanx on the Japanese store, as well. It has an X68k mode that seems to approximate the original X68k PC version of the game.

Main Goal = Get Unfinished Games Under 40
NES - DuckTales 2
GEN - Rocket Knight Adventures
SNS - Dragon Quest V
N64 - Banjo-Tooie Complete on 02-02-20
PS1 - Marvel Vs. Capcom
SDC - Sega GT Removed on 02-10-20
PS2 - Atelier Iris 3
GCN - Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean
XBX - Halo 2
Took my first step this afternoon! Banjo-Tooie is finished.
I have a relatively short (ha!) game of Contra: Hard Corps up next, but afterwards, I'll be playing Sega GT on my Dreamcast. That will be two of the resolutions finished rather early.

I'm playing through red steel 2 now and it is a blast. I literally just ordered Muramasa and Sin and Punishment on Amazon so I should have them in time for vacation next week. A boy and his blob has been on my bucket list forever but its also available on Steam so I will probably go down that route.
The Dolphin emulator plays wiiware games nicely and is the roms are pretty easy to find online. I havent played a ton of wiiware but, as has been mentioned already, the rebirth games are all solid with Contra rebirth probably being the best of the bunch.

Re: 2020 Gaming Goals and Resolutions
2 Months into the year, time to update and see how I'm doing so far
alienjesus wrote:Gaming goals:
Make a significant dent in my RPG and strategy backlogs
Combined, RPGs and Strategy titles make up over a quarter of my gaming backlog. This year I'd like to try and reduce that significantly, which means dedicating myself to some of the longest games in my collection. Ideally, I want to beat 20 - twice as many as this year, but 24 (2 per month) would be amazing.
So far I have beaten 4, but I'm close to the end of 2 more. Basically, this is on track.
This is the current list:
Beat:
1. Ys: The Oath in Felghana (PSN Vita)
2. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Switch)
3. Paper Mario: Colour Splash (Wii U)
4. Valkyria Chronicles (Switch eShop)
In progress:
5. Illusion of Time (SNES)
6. Trials of Mana (Switch)
Up next:
7?: Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War (SFC)
8?: Final Fantasy X-2 (PSVita)
Participate in Together Retro every month I can
Last year I didn't participate much in Together Retro, which makes me sad. So this year I am aiming to be much more involved and try to participate every month.
I'm on track for this so far - below is what I've played
January: Ys: The Oath in Felghana
February: The Firemen & Bishoujou Senshi Sailor Moon
In March I plan to play through Rastan, Rainbow Islands and Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair hopefully.
Focus purchases on gen 5 consoles and Nintendo portables
I own a lot of consoles, but as of recently I've noticed myself leaning towards some preferences for my retro collecting - and rather than combat that, I'd rather lean into it. So I'm going to try and double down - and focus my purchases on Game Boy, GBA and DS, plus expand my N64 and Saturn collections and start expanding out my PS1 library.
I've only purchased 4 games so far and none of the fit this category. The real test will come when I visit the retro market in March
Beat more games than I buy
I managed this last year (just) but this year will be harder thanks to my RPG goal - I'll be beating games more slowly, so I need to be buying more slowly too.
On track so far - I have 4 games on the games acquired list and 9 on games beaten.
Beat one game for every console I haven’t beaten a game on in the last 2 years:
• PS2 – Freak Out
• Vita – Dragons Crown
• PSP – Yggdra Union
• GG – The GG Shinobi II
• 3DO – Star Control 2
• PCE – The Gate of Thunder
• NGPC – Cardfighters Clash
• PC – Discworld Noir
I might want to double down on collecting for my favourite systems, but I don't want my other consoles going neglected - these systems havent had a game beaten for 2 years now, so this goal is to change that in 2020. The games chosen represent some of the games I've owned but not beaten for the longest time on each system
So far I've played none of these. Yggdra Union and Cardfighters Clash are on my RPG list to get to eventually though!
