As in vertical, horizontal, bullet hell etc. Different flavors but still shmups.
RPGs are much harder to compare and use as analogies.

yeah I'd say PSO is more like a third person shooter than Half-Life is.

Halo and Gears are much more similar than Baldurs Gate and Zelda. Zelda isn't even an RPG.
