November Together Retro Poll

Post by CFFJR »

Alright folks, time to vote for November's theme. I ignored game genres in favor of setting/themes, so you can hopefully shoot for something with gameplay you like even if the theme doesn't suit you. In any case, I hope these options sound fun.

This poll will run for 8 days. You get 2 picks, no takesies backsies.

Your choices:

The Old Westerns - Games set in the Wild West, simple as that. No, you can't play Red Dead Redemption 2. You'll just have to settle for Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa.

It's Archaeology, I Swear! - Pulpy adventures! Tricks, traps, temples and treasures. Cryptic maps, traveling the world in rickety planes, and all the derring-do a safari jacket wearing adventurer can handle. Essentially, if it seems like something that could have come out of an Indiana Jones movie or a Donald Duck comic book, then you're on the right track.

Time Travelers Never Die - Any game with a focus on time travel. It doesn't matter if it is used as a mechanic (Sonic CD, for example) or just story progression, as long you spend time in different eras throughout the game.

Comix! - Games based on comic books! Don't limit yourself to capes here. You can play games based on comics from any region of the world, no matter the format (books, newspaper strips, webcomics, and so forth). Consider Spider-man, Asterix, Dragon Ball, Garfield, or Penny Arcade, to name a few obvious ones. There are a ton of options.

The important detail here is that the comics must be the SOURCE material. In other words, despite Sonic the Hedgehog's 25 year history in comics, he started out in video games and thus Sonic games are not eligible for this theme. You could however, play any TMNT games, as the Turtles were born in comics, despite being more popular in other mediums.

And that's all. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Edit: Recommended games, thanks to alienjesus and Ack.

I was not expecting those choices. I like that all of these polls have a different feel to them!

So, my number 1 choice was Comix! That is a setting that I can easily play from my stack of Unfinished games. I have X-Men 2: Clone Wars (GEN), Batman: The Video Games (NES) and X-Men Legends (XBX) as options.

Unfortunately, that is all I have. I played Secret of Evermore already this year, so there goes time traveling. I also played Wild Arms 3 late last year, so that would be perfect for the Wild West setting. And I don't really have any Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider style games.

So, my second option was Time Travelers Never Die. Time Traveling is one of my favorite settings and going back to historical times is a dream of mine. Hopefully, other have games in that as I would enjoy reading people play that setting.

But, Congratulations on choosing some unique settings. I am now very excited for November!

Comix gets my top vote; I've got a bunch I'd like to play, not the least of which are the mountain of games on the Famicom Mini Shonen Jump Edition! I'd like to play something based on Dragon Ball! I also have X-Men Legends or maybe even X-Men Children of the Atom to play for more standard superhero fare.

The Old Western is my other pick. The only game that springs to mind that I have waiting in my back-burner is Wild Guns via Wii's Virtual Console. But I chose this one mostly because of another game I long to play but can't (short of emulating on a PC): Sunset Riders. If I'm lucky I might be able to convince a friend with a MAME cab to invite me over to play it with me, but I don't see myself getting a cartridge of the Genesis version (which is different anyway) anytime soon. It's a shame that that game isn't more readily available, I have very fond memories of playing it as a kid and when I ran across a cab a couple years ago, I still had a total blast playing it.

Nice to see some TR poll choices that aren't simply whole genres in general.

I voted "The Old Westerns" and "It's Archaeology, I Swear!".

I'll be surprised if "Comix!" doesn't win though.

Here's a list of interesting options for each of the themes below. Feel free to add it to first post if you feel like it CFFJR!

The Old Westerns - I hate Westerns in film, but I love the aesthetic in video games.
Gun.Smoke (NES)
Wild Guns (SNES)
Wild Arms (PS1)
Gunman's Proof (SFC)
Sunset Riders (various)
Sherriff (arcade)
Wild Gunman (NES)
The Great Battle V (SFC)
Gun (PS2)
Live A Live (SFC)
Lucky Luke (various)
Mad Dog McCree (arcade)
Red Dead Revolver (Xbox)
Red Steel 2 (Wii)
Tinstar (SNES)
The Cowboys of Moo Mesa (Arcade)

It's Archaeology, I Swear! - Does this have to have a modern kind of setting? There's lots of fantasy games involving exploring old ruins, but I figured those didn't count.
Indiana Jones Great Adventures (SNES)
Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis (PC)
Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb (PC)
Quackshot (MD)
Rick Dangerous (PC)
Tomb Raider (series) (various)
Spelunker (FC)
Pitfall (series) (various)
Wario Land 4 (GBA)
Marvelous (SFC)

Time Travelers Never Die - There's surprisingly quite a few games with a 'Groundhog day' thing going on, as well as stuff like Chrono Trigger.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC)
Chrono Trigger (SNES)
Sonic CD (SCD)
Radiant Historia (DS)
GrimGrimoire (PS2)
Ghost Trick (DS)
Flower, Sun and Rain (DS)
Astro Boy: Omega Factor (GBA)
Professor Layton & The Unwound Future (DS)
Retro Game Challenge (DS)

Comix!
I'm going to ignore the myriad of obvious Marvel, DC and Turtles games, and suggest some other ideas:
Comix Zone (MD)
Asterix (SMS)
Asterix and the Secret Mission (SMS)
Various other Asterix games
DuckTales (NES)
DuckTales 2 (NES)
TinTin games (various)
Lucky Luke games (various)
Little Nemo: The Dream Master
Turok (series)
Shadow Man (N64/DC)

I like these themes, but I found some of them surprisingly hard to think of ideas for, so I'm going to hold out for other suggestions before I vote!

Voted for time travel. Might be the excuse I need to finally play through all the Journeyman Project games sitting my GOG account.

Cool topics! I'll echo what others have said, it's cool to see some really flexible choices for Together Retro. I voted for Archaeology and Old West, although I can certainly think of titles I'd like to play (or re-play) in all of these categories.

Very nice TR poll CFFJR ,very nice indeed, i was waiting for an excuse to get back here...
It's Archaeology, I Swear! and The Old Westerns were my picks, i'm good with any of them because either i'm revisiting Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on the SMS (one of my first games) or Wild Guns Reloaded on Steam. 8)
