Together Retro: Licensed to Thrill (Licensed 2D Platformers)

Post by alienjesus »

For the debut of our new super-deluxe Together Retro format, we'll be celebrating the high calibre of our retro gaming endeavors with a genre not always synonymous with such quality - Licensed 2D platformers.

Whether you're playing along with Disney classics, Saturday morning tie-ins or comic book classics, there's plenty of quality licensed games out there to prove the stereotypes wrong.

The only criteria to meet for this month's theme is that the game needs to be a sidescrolling platformer, based on an IP or license that isn't normally associated with video games. Here's a couple of recommended games to get you started - whether you play 1, 10 or 100, the important thing is to join in, have fun and let use know your thoughts in this thread!

NES:
DuckTales
Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers
Little Nemo
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu
Batman

SNES:
Aladdin
The Lion King
Tiny Toons Adventures: Buster Busts Loose
Porky pigs Haunted Holiday
The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse

Master System:
Asterix
The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck
Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse

Mega Drive:
Aladdin
The Lion King
Animaniacs
McDonald's Treasureland Adventure
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Quackshot

P.S. Racketboy, if you had a specific format in midn for this post, feel free to edit!

Nice.

I don't own The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, but I'll be giving the sequel (The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie) a shot.

There's some second gen I'd say is worth checking out too, like Popeye and Adventures of Tron.

Should be a fun month.

I’m hoping to at least play through the Disney Afternoon Collection. I played Darkwing Duck tonight...it was the first time through the game for me. I liked it a good deal...it may now be my favorite Mega Man game.

I ordered a copy of Duck Tales Remastered from an ebay seller right after Christmas, so waiting for that to come in. I may download the Disney Afternoon Collection in the meantime if it looks like shipping is going to take a while.

I think this is the month in which I'm finally going to beat The Goonies II for NES!
(I predict using a walkthrough.)

This morning I played through Duck Tales on the Disney Afternoon Collection. I won't lie: the rewind button is a godsend. I don't think I have previously beaten any of these games (even though I have played substantial portions of both Duck Tales games and both Chip N' Dale games), but I feel like the "instant redo" option afforded by the Collection will likely encourage me to finish all of them.

I would also add, for anyone on the fence, that the Disney Afternoon Collection has some nice bonuses: the soundtracks to all the games are included, there is a captioned gallery of concept art and merchandising materials, etc. It is currently $8 on Steam if that's a viable option for you: the collection is a steal even at its full retail value.

I'm hoping to go through Duck Tales, McKids, Tiny Toons Adventures, and maybe Batman for NES at some point this month.

Heh, I might give Cool Spot a shot on the SNES.

For those of you who haven't tried them, I do recommend the Disney platformers. Not just Aladdin and The Lion King, but also check out Bonkers, The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse, and Mickey Mania.

I've decided to take the admittedly safe and boring route of choosing Disney licensed platformers. The caveat being I've hardly beaten any of them, so this is a good excuse to do so. I want to beat at least ten. Crazy? Maybe. But I think this is doable, considering these games are generally easy and short.

Right now I'm considering:

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (Genesis)
Darkwing Duck (NES)
Disney's Aladdin (SNES)
Disney's Pinocchio (SNES)
Mickey to Donald Magical Adventure 3 (SFC)
Fantasia (Genesis)
QuackShot starring Donald Duck (Genesis)
Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse (Genesis)
The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie (SNES)
World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (Genesis)

We'll see how it goes!
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
