This seems like a lot of effort to avoid.

Is there a 'normal ending' otherwise, or only bad endings?

The consolation prize ending is not bad and is even kind of bittersweet. The final narrative makes sense depending on how you treated your allies, one way or the other.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Holy shit... this game is addicting. Playing on my Win tablet with an Xbox One pad. Perfect game for sitting on the couch, half watching TV on a day off.

Yeah I was going to maybe consider jumping in, but $20 is a bit much right now.

I have this on PC and need an excuse to play it, but I also need time. I'll give it a try anyway, though. I haven't been able to participate in one of these in a while.

I've wanted to mess with this before. Spent a couple hours with the PS2 version. Don't think I'm ready to chew into it. Pass. Looking forward to everyone else's impressions, though.

How many units should I be aiming to use? I currently have this team:

Laharl
Etna
Brawler
Warrior
Cleric
Red mage
Blue mage
Green Mage
Prinny

They're all the shit variety.

Will I need to replace my units a lot throughout the game? Any quick way to grind levels?

You call the council or whatever it's called. South of the hospital in the hub. Choose a character with more mana points and then you can choose to recruit a new character.
