Looks like Adventures of Lolo at a glance, which is awesome. Might check out the NES version.

I'm up to level 31. My brain hurts and my eyes are bleary.

I picked up the Game Boy version 'Solomon's Club' many years ago when charity shops still sold loose carts for 99p.

I'm fairly sure that many moons earlier I first experienced it on the C64.

Anyway, I'll be playing the GB version, hopefully to completion from tonight. I seem to recall it has passwords which should make things a little easier.

Reduce the number of cycles to something in line with the systems of the era. Like many other games, its using the CPU clock to determine its speed so it goes insane.

I've never changed the clock speed in DOSBox. How do I do that?

Ctrl-F11 to reduce cycles, Ctrl-F12 to increase.

The DOSBox wiki has more information.

Is the shop a part of the original game or something that's only in the GB version? I don't have a manual so I'm not sure what the different stuff is actually for since there isn't an in-game explanation.

I'm now at Room 42. If you can beat this game without save states, you are a gaming god. I am using an emulator and saving at the start of every room and having a hell of a time. It's fun though. The game is very challenging.

I'm still not sure I know what every item does. I haven't figured out what the astrological icons do. They might be checkpoints, but I wouldn't know because I am using save states. It seems ridiculous that this game would expect you to complete it on 3 lives.

Here's the items I do know:

Fire potion: Let's you shoot 1 fireball
Mega fire potion: Let's you shoot 1 fireball that can travel through multiple enemies and around corners on walls.
Scroll piece: Increases you inventory for holding fire potions
Yellow potion: Kills all enemies on screen and turns them into money bags.
Grey potion: Increases life meter/aka time limit
Hourglass: I'm not sure what the different colors mean or what these does, but I think it cut my life meter in half once. Another time I filled it.
Fairies: Collect 10 for an extra life
Bells: Releases another fairy
Coins & Gems: Just for points as far as I can tell. Also used to get in your way of building blocks.
