So I have a small gear to grind with the GOG version of Raiden Legacy, which is that it doesn't save high scores between runs. WTH! You can coax MAME into saving high scores and yet the developers of a modern PC compilation port couldn't be bothered!? Poor form.

Other than that I'm enjoying the game (which is to say that I suck as bad as I suspected I would). I can get most of(?) the way through the second stage, but by the time I get there things start getting pretty hectic and I may as well set the controller down at that point.

Important question: bullets or lasers and why? (I'm sure this boils down to personal preference more than anything, but it's always nice to get some input from veterans). Personally I really like the laser, but it requires me to engage in excessive dodging and weaving which inevitably becomes my downfall. So a nice spread shot is probably more my speed at this point.

toothpaste laser ftw

Just got all my stuff setup so I can fully get my Raiden on this month. Playing around with all the various titles, from the first all the way to IV.

The best way to play one is to use the spreadshot through most of the level and then get the blue shot right before the boss. Wash rinse and repeat.

Fooled around with Raiden II/DX in MAME yesterday. I like the feel of these over the first one. Little faster, more powerful (TOOTHPAAASTE), better panic bomb. Just an all around improvement imo.

DX is prolly the pinnacle of the main canon Raiden games.

Played a bit this evening (SNES).

Not bad. Love that old school shmup action.

Looking around YouTube and elsewhere it appears this isn't the best port of the game though. It's a little choppy in places.

Look at the developer for the SNES port.
The infamous MICRONICS.

Played some of Raiden III for a bit. Immediately feels a little easier than classic Raiden, as I got to clearing Stage 1 on my first couple of tries. Doesn't look as good as IV; I reckon MOSS hadn't quite figured out the 3D polish yet. The green laser is a shit replacement for the good old toothpaste beam. Sticking with the red shot on this one.
