Perfect time to return to the GBC game; I haven't touched it in a while.

The GBC game is great but the GBA version is even better.

Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64 is coming to Wii U Virtual Console today in North America, for anyone who might be interested!

Started Advance Tour today. Interesting to see how the focus is less on Mario and more on the RPG elements, I wasn't expecting that. There was even an RPG-style introductory dialog scene! But I like it so far. Nice graphics, easy swing meter (auto works good every time!) and got -2 on my first tournament as well as 153 XP. I can't wait to transfer my character over to the Gamecube when it's more developed.

I also appreciate the fast pace too. You can play 18 holes in about 20 minutes. I play a lot of video golf games, and I like many such as NES Open Golf and Fred Couples Golf (Game Gear), but this Mario Golf is all right!

Had my first loss today on Advance Tour, on the Dunes course playing against the pro (Azalea?). Having fun though, it really is quick and easy to make a little progress.

I also own Toadstool Tour, but I don't think I have a link cable. I know I've passed on at least a couple at thrift shops, assuming I would never use it. Kicking myself a little now.

I completed all the training challenges in the first practice area, they're great for fast XP.

I also picked up the original GBC Mario Golf today, so I'll be playing that now too.

The GBC Mario Golf... wow. It's an RPG like Advance Tour but I'm NOT used to those difficult meters. This is levels of old school golf here now!

So after that I transferred my GBA character(s) to Toadstool Tour and played a bit there. By far the coolest feature here is when you use the Advance Tour characters to win tournaments and character battles, etc. on Toadstool Tour you gain experience for your characters, unlock new characters, and get star holes in Advance Tour! All you have to do is link up again and send them back with that new experience. I took advantage of this feature today, that's awesome.

I recently re-acquired the GBC version of Mario Golf a few months ago as I got back into GB/GBC stuff this year since it's super fun, under the radar relatively speaking, and cheap compared to the same era home stuff. I played the hell out of this game when I was in college when it came out. I racked up at least 40 hours on the RPG alone and a lot more just going to town on the open golf game with it, and even linked my little dude from the N64 and moved that back and forward. I've had the other 3 games in the franchise, and I think it got worse for wear with age sadly. Sure it got prettier and added more Mario like stuff, characters and obstacles, but I felt the RPG end failed to have the fun or balance of the GBC on GBA, and while prettier I think the N64 courses had more fun to them than the GC courses did but it's in no way really a worse game (still own it.)

The 3DS game though was a snore, completely bored me after a couple of hours and I sold it, also wasn't happy about them ultimately leaving out existing in game data to end up charging more than a normal 3DS game price to get it.

Maybe I should give a few rounds with the GBC game during this month. I did start a few games when I first got the cart but other games/stuff got in the way since. I'm actually holding out for a backlit GBC and a ribbon cable adapter for a GBa(to 101 screen light it up) in the mail so I've put GB (all) on hold currently this month.

Finally got round to starting this by playing the N64 games this evening. I played through all 18 holes of the first tournament and came 8th with a score of + 8 overall. Could do better.

I think I might try to unlock a few characters next - i'd probably be better off playing with someone with a longer drive and getting that hang of them instead of sticking with the crappy starting guys.
