Star Tropics

A good alternative to Zelda for those looking for more of that action. Even divorced from that this is a good game.

I love Star Tropics!

You comment in your review that the game is begging for eight-way movement. I disagree. The game was designed for four-way grid-based movement and it works. The constraint lets the game have jumping puzzles that are fun and interesting without the added frustration of keeping perfect control over your location from the 3/4 overhead perspective.

I don't know if you have played the sequel, but it does feature eight-way free movement. I would argue that the game is worse for it. Jumping puzzles are neutered on the puzzle front by the added free movement, but made significantly more difficult on the execution front because it becomes very easy to miss a platform or accidentally just walk off an edge. This leads to a lot of cheap-feeling deaths.

I'm still really enjoying your reviews! Thanks for posting them!

A good game that should have been localized without any edits.

It shouldn't have taken this long for me to get around to this one. An all around great game that handles multiple genres well for welcome variety.
