The SNES fighter originated the engine they later used for Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz.

It's pretty fantastic.

Wow, I didn't know that! Haha just looked it up. Pretty sweet piece of information there, thanks.

Today's game is one of my favourite Dreamcast games. Bangai-O.

I've only played the Dreamcast version. I've never played the N64 original or the DS or 360 games.

confession: I played Bangai-o once for like 30 mins. I didn't really get it. I played the DS game for about the same length. Also didn't get it. I feel like it's one of those games I would/should like... if I could just commit to playing it long enough to understand what the heck was going on.

I like the Dreamcast Bangai-O a whole bunch. I adore the DS ones though.

It's just fast paced chaotic fun. Missiles everywhere!

:o

What was it about Bangai-O you didn't like Noise? Was it that you just couldn't get into it? That happens with me sometimes. I find Bangai-O really fun and addictive though. The only problem I have with it is it doesn't support VGA.

Sums up how I feel about most Treasure games.

I'm also one of those guys who just scratches my head at Treasure games - though granted, my experience is mostly limited to the old-school stuff. Still, something about Gunstar Heroes, for example, just doesn't sit right with me, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Enjoying your blog, by the way. Very impressive you've managed the daily posts. Though I have to disagree with one of the early ones... Sw Battlefront. I spent about 25 hours with it over the holidays, and quickly deleted it from my PS4. It's not that, like everyone else, I hated the lack of content... though that's certainly true. I got it on sale for $40 and still felt a little ripped off.

But mostly I just wasn't impressed with what was there. I had some arcade-y fun, but not that much. Mostly I just felt that either 1: the matchmaking was terrible, or 2. the game is woefully imbalanced. Every single match was always so lopsided - either my team decimated the other in a matter of minutes, or we ourselves got slaughtered. I also hate the way customization is handled - the game either needs more options, or just a straight-up class system. Which would also require re-tooling how the power-ups work.

Not a big fan of the heroes, either. It's like taking turns playing a single-player game... waiting for your friend to pass the controller to you. And then you get the controller, and you have no clue what to do with the limited time available to you. Definitely need to take the heroes for a spin in the (lousy) single player missions first. Not that it really matters - the melee characters in particular are really clunky. I spend most of the time whacking the wall with my lightsaber.

My favorite mode was the Squadron dogfights... surprisingly, because I don't normally like sim games of any type. But the rebels have such a clear advantage... shields will always win out against the weak speed boost that the Imperials have. On top of that, here the game was REALLY limited... a single game type, with only 4 maps - all of which have the same objectives and play the same.

Maybe I should get around to writing my review for my own blog, but I'm afraid it would end up just being a really long rant
I review (mostly old) games at: The Annals of Retrodom.

First thing you need to understand about Bangai-O on dreamcast is switching the control setting. It's a twin-stick shooter but they default you to a really awkward non-twin-stick set up.

The early levels are also kind of weak, to ease you into things. Once stuff starts getting absolutely insane it's glorious. It's probably my favorite Treasure game. It takes risk-reward gameplay to a wonderful place.

There are a few puzzle-based levels as well but not as many as the DS and HD sequels.

@touchofkiel Firstly, thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I hope I can keep it up
As for Battlefront, I'm still enjoying the hell out of it. The game has its flaws, absolutely, especially in terms of balancing. Also, there's been more than a few times when I have spawned right next to people on the other team and have died again straight away, which isn't exactly fair (I've also been known to kill them though, which isn't fair either). Still though... Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the Star Wars licence, but I just find the game so much fun. I honestly love it. I also went back to try the old Battlefront games, since it had been years since I played them, and honestly... They've aged to fuck.

@Gunstar Green Oh yeah, the default controls sucked. What was up with that? I even remember the manual advises you change them... Then why make them the default controls? :?
