Re: Using controller adapters on Atari 5200 can be great fun

Post by ave1 »

Hi CRTGAMER- Yes, the PS2 arcade sticks that I have are great on the 5200 games (love to play Joust and Galaxian with the Pelican stick that I have). I am tempted to get a second Masterplay Interface Clone to play Space Dungeon and Robotron, but I already can play Robotron with two joysticks on my 7800 using my X-arcade Tankstick along with other adapters that I own, so I'm not sure it'd be worth the $$$ for the 2nd MPI just to play Space Dungeon.

I have quite a few PC gameport gamepads and joysticks which really have made my 5200 experience a lot of fun. Bohoki's $12 adapter may lack aesthetics, but it is really awesome for using many of my gameport controllers in my collection on my 5200 (though not all are compatible).

I have read your Spinner guide and greatly appreciated the thoroughness of it all. Great job! I liked how you included info from my 2012 article and video (and it's funny that you recognized me!)- and I'm thinking I can get you an X-Connection just for being a cool guy :) PM me and I'll get your address and send my spare one out to you- on one condition: if you ever come upon one of those Zero Tech 2 or Zero Tech 3 controllers (online or in the wild) for a somewhat reasonable price, you'll let me know about it via my facebook messaging so I can get to enjoy the controller as you have. Again- PM me and I'll get you my info.

One more thing- I have an upcoming video which pertains to a PS1 wheel controller called the DOC'S Racing Controller. It has a JogCon mode, a NeGcon, as well as an analog stick mode (which is basically a spinner mode). Are you aware that DOC'S made this controller? I'll be showing it being used to play Tempest X...

Sent you a PM. I do not use Facebook, but can correspond thru the PM or by EMail.

Looking forward to the DOC's Racing Controller review, never heard of that controller. Love Spinner games, thanks to your reminder just picked up a Jogcon on Ebay for under twenty bucks shipped. :D

In case you have not heard, Atari Age released 5200 Tempest cart with the coding finished by the original programmer decades later! It includes the 5200 Trakball support which has tight controls just like the Arcade Tempest Spinner. Only thirty bucks (cart only) at the Atari Age store.

I modded my Blaze Twinshock so the second joystick can be selected to Player One primary four face buttons. Works great for many Arcade Compilations on the PS1 and PS2. However as you mentioned, a second adapter would be the only way to get Arcade Twinstick on 5200 Robotron. Ah well, the Atari Space Dungeon Holders puts good use to their 1st party sticks. The Wico 5200 sticks work well too, the centering spings can be unlocked from underneath.

Glad you finally have a Jogcon controller... I managed to get one a little under a year ago at a gamestore for a good price (less than $10), but the going rate online is $30 it seems.

Your modded twinsticks sounds like a nice innovation. You mentioned the 5200 coupler and I do have one so I can still use older controllers on Space Dungeon and Robotron from time to time like you do...

I do need to get Tempest on my 5200 to use with my Trakball. Need to get that one soon!

Thanks, the modded Blaze Twinshock works for many of the Arcade compilations on many consoles; most have a default option of the face buttons for the second stick. The PS1 Midway and Williams Arcade compilations are unique, offer programmable controls for ANY Arcade stick arrangement.

I posted other Guides in the Guides section of the Board Index.

That Tempest game was a limited run for the complete version. Unsure how many more of the cart only version Atari Age has left, don't wait it is only $30!

For those of you who haven't yet subscribed to my YouTube channel, I'm all about classic console controllers and my latest episode has to do with controller add-ons
(for classic 80s consoles and there's even some discussion of Wii and PS3 controller add-ons). Check it out and feel free to share your thoughts :)

And here is the next installment which covers the Sega Master System and NES controller add-ons along with some interesting Atari-related content and mods. Be sure to comment if you've had any of these add-ons in the past.

I love controllers and add ons. I've got several sticks, multitaps, light guns, etc.. I love this stuff. I'll be sure to check out all of your video's I don't have any special joysticks exept for maybe the Namco Volume controler for the playstation.
I made a thread about compatible games here:

Alright, I checked out the link you provided and I really would like to have a Namco Volume controller- I didn't know that it had so many compatible games. For now, I can use my Nyko trackball for the Playstation... but I'm sure I'd probably have more fun with the volume controller.

I now have a new presentation on obscure controller add-ons from the Playstation, N64, Saturn generation of gaming (along with some add-ons pertaining to the Dreamcast). Here you go:
