How many of you are actually still using CRT TVs?

Charcoal will help pull out odors, but you'd have to wrap the TV up with the charcoal inside of the wrap.

So after several hours of successfully tinkering & fine tuning the retro setup this weekend, I've decided my 17" VGA CRT is going to make the move with me this summer. I'll gift the 27" beast of a CRT TV... but man... the smaller VGA CRT looks great.

I've been thinking of doing a dedicated thread on this as I feel like VGA CRTs don't get enough love. There's not enough info on it & my images posted here previously seemed to get some kudos. Any1 interested in a write up on it? Until then... summary....

My current set up:
CRT Monitor
Gateway VX675 - 17" PC VGA CRT
> Set color to 9300k
> Capable of up to 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz
> I'm using at 640x480p over VGA for everything below

"Scalers"
- XRGB 3
> For 240p 15Khz consoles
> Using B1 FPGA mode
> Less than 2 ms lag, ~1/10 Framemeister lag
> Scanlines at 127 of 255 for 240p

- Mayflash YPbPr to RGBHV Transcoder
> For 480p inputs (no 480i support)
> Buy a new power supply!
> Tested as lagless transcoder.

Consoles
NES
NES > composite out > XRGB 3 > VGA out > CRT
* use a high quality cable. I actually used a high quality component cable & it cleaned up a lot of noise
* Turn LFP (Low Pass Filter) on. Huge difference!

SNES
SNES > RGB SCART out > XRGB 3 > VGA out > CRT

PS1
PS1 > s video out > XRGB 3 > VGA out > CRT

OG Xbox
OGX > Monster component cables > Mayflash Transcoder > VGA out > CRT
* No scanlines on this method
* 480p not XRGB 3 strong point IMO

Are you using S-Video from the PS1 because the XRGB3 only has one RGB input?

That's definitely a convenient side effect lol. Should've noted in breakdown the SCART feeds into a single JP21 adapter.

Really 3 main reasons I'm still using s video for PS1 vs RGB...

The S video looks DANG good. It's an OEM Sony s vid cable & it's impressive. Huge leap over OEM Sony composite.

Secondly, I was debating how much more $ to sink into the SCART + VGA CRT combo vs a new investment in Retrovision component for multi consoles + RetroTink + HDMI LCD route.

Lastly, seems to be some confusion on XRGB3 & PS1. Sync on Luma recommend per Junker HQ... but assuming that's bc the custom "CSYNC" cables didn't exist yet (built in stripper included in cable as PS1 doesn't natively support it). So will probably buy a Sync on Luma to be safe eventually.

... okay... I may just start a thread on my VGA CRT set up and kind of evolve it over time as I tweak it. If I try to go all out round 1, I'll procrastinate

I love my little Trinitron KV 1223 R. Anyone know the age of this particular type of TV? It supports RF and even has the little screws in back for the old "fork" connectors. Got it at Goodwill for $2.99.

According to the Visual Alchemy site the image comes from, it was made in 1980
It's definitely a pretty rad looking TV; lots of boxy 80s charm!

Yeah, I love the digital channel display on it. Is the speaker on the top?

By the way, Sony remotes are usually very easy to locate. Just find the user manual for that TV by searching the model number. Somewhere in the user manual Sony will always mention the model number of the remote that came with the TV. Then search that model number on eBay and you should be able to get multiple hits and find one for cheap. Sony seems to have always used a single model remote for multiple model TVs, which makes them easier to find. I've done this several times now and have always been able to easily find a replacement remote and for cheap. I've done it for my Sony 13 and 32" TVs, my Sony DVD player, and my Sharp 13" TV/VCR combo.

Usually with the 13" screen you'll be sitting close enough that you're basically in reach to adjust the volume, but you still have to sort of get up. I know, lazy Americans. But the remote is still handy for changing the volume. Though this model TV does have those nice square flat volume buttons. Maybe just keep a stick by your seat and adjust the volume with that LOL. But also, you'll need the remote if you ever need to get into the service menu to fix something.
