NES Collecting - Expanding and Splitting Up R&V Guide?

by racketboy Thu Jul 22, 2021 12:57 pm

Hey everyone
Just so you know, I just did a big update of the Rare & Valuable guide.
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/the-rare ... -nes-games

Even after a heated collecting market in 2020, we still saw NES collecting value growth in the 2021. I've published a significant update to my Rare & Valuable NES guide that covers the rise in Complete/Mint copies surging, more rarities rising high and, yes, graded stuff.

PAL Section Expansion?
I noticed that on the PAL side, Mr Gimmick is starting to really climb up there in value and I'm thinking I should spend some time doing at least a dedicated writeup or two for that section, but I don't feel super confident in it. Is there any NES PAL experts out there that want to help out on that section?

Graded / Sealed Section Have Separate Guide?
I'm not a big fan of the sealed and graded trend, but it's hard to ignore. I also feel like I wouldn't be doing my "job" if I didn't cover it. At the same time, the NES guide is getting quite large and I'm wondering if maybe I should keep those sections on the main R&V guide slim and then link to a dedicated Sealed and Graded Guide. I might start keeping track of dates and such of high-profile sales. Feels like kinda "boring" work, but somebody has to do it?
Thoughts?

Big Movers
Also did some calculations to figure out the biggest movers over the past years. Here's a preview graphic

Did you make that percentile graphic? Looks good!

Wata/sealed - It's all hype and speculation.

I don't like kotaku but they did a decent article in 2019 wherein comic investors are buying up sealed games.

Agreed. The market there is only a little better than penny cryptos.

I agree on the speculators aspect. But I do feel like I need to at least have yearly updates for the big consoles and/or when there's big moves.
If nothing else, if people want to offload parts of their collection and cash out, I'd like them to be informed.

And yes, I made the graphic :) Most of my job is now graphic design, so I had fun with those

... perhaps in light of concerns about the market, such as those mentioned in the video, it be worth noting in the article that there doesn't seem to be independent verification of a lot of "record breaking" sales apart from what Wata and Heritage claim.

Haven't finished watching this yet, but I'm loving the level of research in this video. It's much of what I suspected taken to another level.
I may just include this link in the graded/pristine section with very minor notes about WATA / Heritage Auctions. I don't plan on tallying up their auction prices. I didn't feel right about it, but now I have more than a hunch. While I'm sure some shilling goes on with eBay, I trust those numbers more and they don't yet seem as amazingly ridiculous.
Thanks for sharing!
