I am moving to Washington DC, which has a very high crime rate, and I want to physically secure my game consoles since I have hard modified all of them, often in multiple ways, making them virtually irreplacible without a huge investiment of time and money. If someone grabbed my PS2, Xbox or Saturn I would committ sepukku since I did a great multiple mods on those systems. I was wondering if anybody knows a way of locking down a system where I can lock it up where I can get the disk out and use the system normally, but it is much more difficult to steal it if somone to steal it, since the average burglarly takes less than five minutes (I teach criminology at a college).
If it takes more than five minutes to defeat the security, I doubt someone would waste their time for fear of getting caught. Does anybody have any ideas that are better than the one I am proposing below, since it would really limit my ability to bring my systems to my friend's houses?
I was imagining using some sort of thin metal spokes fitted to the shape of the unit and screwing them down, which means that they have to be unscrewed individually which would take a prohibitively long period of time for a burglar. It would be annoying if I wanted to move the console, but thats the price I pay for security. I figure about two accross the width and length would be enough to deter people and make it strong enough to be resistant to tearing straight off the entertainment center.

what is an armory desk?
What is an armory desk? I would like to hear more about this. I would also like to note that I have a PS2, Xbox, xbox 360, and perhaps a saturn and gamecube I would like to prevent from being stolen, though I think the game cube and xbox 360 may be separate from the other systems and I am not worried since I already have an idea how to protech these two systems pretty well thought out. So all in all there are quite a few systems that need protection as well as to be connected.

Ok; of course there are lots of options. But nothing you could buy; it will require your own building of it (or paying out your ass).
Of course you've got the first major thing to consider; you don't want anyone in your house first and foremost. Take care of that first, bars, bolts, all the fun shit!
Then to protect your consoles. You could get a lockable stell desk like dude man was speaking of. But it would be kind of cumbersome and expensive. Your next option is build a lockable entertainment center.
Construct it out of what ever you'd like; wood is ok, destructable, but it takes a lot longer then 5 minutes and would probably be over looked. You could then construct bays in the entertainment center with plexy glass doors on bolted steel frames into the front of the bay so that it'd require a key to get in.
Or you could get steel brackets that you can bolt over the console holding it down (like they do inside of stores).
Or you can build molded front panels to the bays that only allow access to the CD tray and controllers.
Or a combination of amongst other ideas.
There really isn't anything you're gonna find and be able to purchase though. Unless you bought a safe and only removed them from the safe to play it... but personally all of this sounds absurd. Why be so concerned about this!? Lock your doors, bar your windows, what freaking part of DC are you moving. Yes I know DC has one of the highest crime rates in the country (including murders... ohhhh the irony! I shutter with glee... sorry, I'm a cynic). Anyways, I'm in South Florida which is also noteable for it's high crime rate and I've never been this anal about my video game collection (which I am obsessed over). Really are you going to be strait in the midst of the ghetto? Or are you going to be in venice? If you can afford it go somewhere that has a reported lower crime rate in the city (most cities have websites to check the number of police calls/visits/arrests are made in different communities). Move there... if you can't, don't play your consoles.
I had to live in the hood; I boxed up all my treasured valuables and hid them in the back of my closet. If you looked in my apartment you saw a small TV with one console hooked to it. You'd never know I owned every console made from 1980 to 2001 (well at the time... ive sold some... including a VIS; ever hear of it!?).
But yeah, I got a second job and worked more hours so I could move out of there and to a nicer neighborhood... not home as often, but hey I feel safer walking through the front door. I a small white boy that weighs in at 120 lbs... I don't need to be moving into Riviera Beach and moving my 60" big screen in the front door while Mr and Mrs Bugaloo next door with the crackhead shooting up in the front yard speak loud and clear

yeah, my suggestion would be to lock up your place secure, cause whats the better; someone climbs in and gets everything, or someones climbs in and gets everything but the consoles??? in this case i`d cry for sure, but in comparison to my other stuff it wouldn`t make a difference at all. so i`d try to get my whole place safe from the beginning.

I think getting one of those shell desks would be the best idea, or building some sort of wood moulding for systems that have ejecting trays, that would at least make it very annoying to steal the thing. I dont really care as much about the gamecube, dreamcast and saturn, they can be replaced fairly easy, Ill just chain them down.
I dont want to have to disconnect and reconnect everything all the time, I have alot of consoles. When studying crime, criminologists routinely exclude washington DC because it has such as freakishly higher crime rate that it skews the analysis and distorts the results.

We first off stated that yes we know DC has high crime... as does the majority of South Florida. I named a city actually... I personally live in a very nice area of South Florida now (I live in North Palm Beach now), but I used to live in the less savory places of South Florida.
What are comments are is protecting your house from being broken in to instead of protecting your video game consoles. Make it safer for YOU not your pieces of plastic and electronics. I'd be heart broken myself if my video games were stolen... but at the same time I would be heart broken if ANYTHING got stolen. So instead would rather protect my home instead of my trivial videogame collection.
Like I said, dead bolt, chain, bars on windows. This all will protect all your stuff and yourself. The amount of cost your gonna have to invest into 'protecting' your video games and still allowing them to be easily played by you is going to be one enormous bill.
