Sony Wega CRT KV24FS120 Service Mode Settings

Post by AznKhmerBoi »

Hi all,

I just bought a tv (Sony Wega CRT KV24FS120) and the grid matrix etc... was off, so I wanted to rebalance/fix the issue by using the service mode.
Unfortunately i tried and failed many times to get it right.

Image

Right now its okay, the screen is filled and everything seems to be aligned, but when sprites are scrolling vertically..it gets stretched and just looks bad.

I was wondering if anybody here know where I can get the default factory settings (data/number) for each field/object on the service console for a 24inch model.

Thank you,
sk

HOW TO ENTER SERVICE MODE

[PWR OFF] - [DISP], [5], [VOL+], [PWR ON]
-or-
[PWR OFF] - [DISP], [5], [PWR ON]

The TV will turn on in service mode and the screen will look something like this:

NAVIGATE IN SERVICE MODE
[1] = Moves to Previous Menu Item
[4] = Moves to Next Menu Item
[3] = Adjusts Value Up
[6] = Adjusts Value Down
[MTS] = Toggles Stereo/Mono Audio

SAVE NEW SETTING
[MUTE] followed by [ENTER] = stores NEW service mode settings to NVRAM

RESTORE USER SETTINGS
[8] followed by [ENTER] = Restores All *USER* settings to factory defaults

RESET VALUES
[0] followed by [ENTER] = Read Default service mode value from stored settings. (service mode reset)

LEAVE SERVICE MODE
[PWR OFF] = Leave Service Mode any settings not written will be in effect until TV is unplugged or a Reset is performed.

RETURN TO DEFAULT SETTINGS:
BEFORE storing NEW settings - unplug TV from wall, wait a few seconds, then plug back in, turn TV set on - All settings not written will have been lost.
AFTER storing NEW settings - restore original value from list you made of original values before adjustments and store in NVRAM.

PLEASE NOTE:
RECORD ALL ORIGINAL VALUES BEFORE
MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS.

XBR250 COLOR BANDING PROBLEM
If you have a XBR250 and you're experiencing horizontal blue, green or red banding across the screen with a component video connection, you will need to enter service mode and adjust the HOSC parameter. Initially HOSC is set to 7 (factory default), you'll need to change it to about 11 - this will eliminate the color banding in the picture.

There are no default settings! Each TV has to be calibrated slightly different than the next, even from the factory. That's why when talking about the service menu most people say something like this: Be sure to write down all of your setting BEFORE changing anything.

What I recommend doing is writing down all your current settings now. They might not be perfect, but you can always make things worse. At least you would be able to revert back to decent settings.

As Ziggy mentioned, each has it's own settings from the factory; That being said, I have found service manuals with default values listed - the defaults listed for my 3CRT rear projector were almost identical to what it came with. I've also helped someone find what I thought was the correct service manual and it turned out to be for a very-similar model, but the default values in it messed his TV up really bad - much worse than he had done by experimentation when he asked for help here. Don't trust listed defaults if you find some.

Here's the service manual for your TV (supposedly? - it lists it on the first page)
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/68348 ... fs120.html

To help fix the straightness of the display after adjusting the grid to my liking, I use a yard stick and several grid and concentric circle test patterns to try to perfect the settings. Using the yard-stick on all verticals and horizontals - deciding on a measurement for the grid lines, then using just the straight edge to align the diagonals can get things pretty close. Getting things just-right definitely takes a whole lot longer than setting them close-to-right. On the TVs I've done the grid and/or convergence to, even having things close was a lot better than how the picture was - mostly due to the amount of overscan which was cut off originally. I did find that I had to re-adjust a lot while viewing scrolling screens (you can display video, overlay the grid on the video, switch to dots , etc. while adjusting geometry). I recommend the 240p Test Suite, tho I mostly used an ancient laptop I have which has composite video output built-in and great overscan controls in it's ATI driver.

Here's my test files and such - maybe they can help you a bit.
My ISP's service is on the fritz lately - I think it's because of the optical infrastructure so let me know if the above link's down - my IP probably changed due to outage.
