Sega CD Model 2 laser assembly replacement

by abeaver Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:14 pm

I have a Sega CD Model 2 which uses the Samsung SOH-04T assembly, but those are impossible to find anymore. It seems most Model 2s use the Sony KSS-210, so I was wondering if my model would be compatible with it, even if I had to do some kind of hack to it or something.

Sorry Bit late, these work fine. I have used these to repair the Sega CD2 I have. Great seller too!

Thank you so much for that! We should have a thread stickied with links to parts and common fixes for consoles. It would save people a lot of time and prevent threads asking the same questions.

I have a Model 2 unit with the Optima 6 laser and it's working fine with the exception of not being able to read some games. Sewer Shark and most other Sony Imagesoft games will read but others like Sonic CD will not. I chalked this up to the laser being worn out and purchased a new one to replace it with. After removing the solder blob and installing the new laser, the disc isn't spinning up. The laser moves into position, but then the disc never spins and I end up getting a 'No Disc' message.

I've actually made two passes at removing the solder from the blob area, the second time after acquiring soldering wick. But it still won't spin up with the replacement laser. I'm wondering if I might've damaged the board trying to remove the solder, as it does look scorched but the traces appear to be intact.

Is this laser salvageable?
