It legit looks like it was made by a computer, even with the incredibly unnatural dialogue. I love how it used glitter as a screen transition, and the flashback scene was just an amazing sight to behold.

I'll definitely look up the other one. Nothing is more strange than watching bad Christmas movies in January.

Our favorite part was how, whenever someone would see the female lead, they would be like: “Oh my god! You have to be the most beautiful woman in the WORLD!” Or, “Your clothes! They’re the height of fashion!” This is, like, a third of the film’s dialogue. The lead, however, was a perfectly normal looking woman, and I’m pretty sure her clothes were from Anne Taylor Loft.

Also, the prince’s pants didn’t match the military “uniform” he clearly got from a local costume store, and the prince’s kingdom of “Edgemont” must be pretty broke since, when he visits the U.S., they put him up in a 2 1/2-star B&B.

That movie is just so bad, and I love it.

It's January! My unofficial "Re-boot" month. Let's see how this goes....

We Are What We Are

Image

After the family matriarch's death, the Parker's are still intend on following through with their family traditions involving "The Day of the Lamb." But with mom gone, her tasks now fall to her two daughters, who don't seem too keen on following through with their families unique traditions.

This is a reboot of a Mexican film of the same name that was release only three years prior in 2010. But rather than a reboot, the film is more of a re-imagining, as it creates it's own unique story, with the only connecting piece being the unique "tradition" the family partakes in. I ended up really liking this one. The acting and visuals are great, the atmosphere is on point, the story is well-put together (though a bit of a slow burn), and the horror slowly ramps up until the end, with the viewer constantly wondering how the story is going to end. Overall, it's really good. My only qualm is that the family's "secret" is really easy to decipher, so you end up guessing what it is well before the big reveal. But other than that, I have no complaints.

Good movie. Go watch it.

Ghostbusters Afterlife

Image

The new Ghostbusters is...okay, I guess. I actually only watched about 75% of the movie. I stopped watching during what seemed to be the final confrontation as I was just bored. You know, I think a big part of the charm of the old Ghostbusters movies was the original cast. We keep getting new ones now with a new cast of characters and I just...don't care about any of them. Afterlife gives us a bunch of lame kids, a boring single mom, and a wacky school substitute teacher, none of whom are particularly likable or interesting. Maybe the fact that the movie focuses so much on the kids is another reason I wasn't into it. This feels like Ghostbusters for 10 year olds. Ghostbusters Afterlife didn't do much for me, and Ghostbusters 2016 was just pure garbage. The best new Ghostbusters movie to come out in recent years was not actually a movie, it was this:

The film doesn't look good to me, but who cares if a character isn't likable :P especially when in stuff like action films where all they do to make a character likable is to kill their wife or kids or whatever.

I think the 2016 Ghostbusters is unfairly maligned.

It's not at all like the original, and was a very different style of comedy, but I laughed out loud quite a bit.

I think that if they hadn't just titled it "Ghostbusters" and had so much garbage "girl power" marketing it would have been better received.

Reno 911! The Hunt for QAnon, a decently funny Paramount+ exclusive "extended episode" of Reno 911!, which back in 2020 made a revival on the short-lived Quibi streaming service, whose content iirc ended up on The Roku Channel.

Anyway, the Reno Sheriff's Department is tasked with serving court papers to the head of QAnon, said to be on a cruise ship. In typical Reno 911! fashion, everything goes sideways quickly with disastrous yet hilarious results.

Definitely for fans of Reno 911!

Also known as After Death, Zombie Flesh Eaters 3, Zombie 4: After Death

Yet another in-name-only-but-not-really sequel to George Romero's Dawn of the Living Dead, which was released in Europe as Zombi. Read here for more info on the Zombi franchise, for lack of a better term.

A group of scientists set up shop on a tropical island to find a cure for various diseases, but when a cure for leukemia fails to heal the daughter of a voodoo priest, he invokes dark magic and opens the doors to Hell. Years later, a young woman who escaped as a child finds herself back on the island and in possession of an amulet that can seal the door and end the zombies' reign over the island.

Oh, and one of the guys is played by, I shit you not, porn star Jeff Stryker, who's credited as Chuck Peyton.

Other than that, it's a big step backwards from Zombi 3, which After Death director Claudio Fragasso (of Troll 2 "fame") cowrote the screenplay to. All the nuance of the late great Lucio Fulci is replaced by tropes galore and action set pieces. Basically half the style of Zombi 3, none of the substance.

Finally got around to seeing Joker. I always liked batman universe since its more realistic than a guy shooting lasers from his eyes kind of stuff. Will there be sequels or is it a one time thing?

I am impressed by Joaquin Phoenix performance since I believe one of the toughest things in acting is to convince the viewer of a fictional character especially since you say the same actor doing other characters previously.

Week two of re-boot month....

The Stepfather (2009)

Image

Michael comes back from military school, only to find that his mother has started dating another man, David. Everyone around him seems to like David, but there's just something about him that Michael finds suspicious. And he's absolutely right. Turns out David has a nasty habit of insinuating himself in fatherless families in the hopes of creating his ideal family unit. Unfortunately, David's expectations are unreasonably high, and when things don't work out he decides to 'reset' his life by killing the family and moving on to the next target. So now it's up to Michael to figure out what's going on before his entire family ends up as another one of David's failed experiments.

This movie is based off of the similarly titled film of the same name from 1987. The main difference is, this one ends up being horribly boring. Everything is so horribly clichéd that the thriller doesn't end up being at all thrilling. It also doesn't help that to hit the PG-13 mark, they had to cut out much of the bloody brutality of the original. Not that I'm saying a movie has to be bloody to be brutal, but the original just ends up being far more visceral and shocking that way. The other issue is that the actor playing The Father always seems to have this constant air of suspicion around him, which makes you wonder why everyone seems to taken by him. Terry O’Quinn's original portrayal feels much more natural and personable, so when he did do something violent it had more impact.

So, overall, very boring reboot that lacks the unique personality of the original and didn't bother to add anything new. Watch the original and skip this one.
